Geography of Islam in Poland

Streszczenie:Celem pracy jest omówienie aktualnego stanu rozwoju islamu w Polsce. Autor przyjął perspektywę geograficzną, koncentrując się na kwestiach rozmieszczenia wyznawców tej religii, lokalizacji miejsc modlitwy, a także wpływu migracji współczesnych na rozwój islamu w Polsce. Podstawowym źródłem informacji były dane statystyczne różnych instytucji publicznych i religijnych; przeprowadzono także kwerendę biblioteczną oraz internetową. Liczbę muzułmanów w Polsce oszacowano na około 35 tysięcy osób. W pracy wykazano, że w Polsce islam ma dwa oblicza: historyczne związane z Tatarami oraz współczesne, związane głównie z migrantami i uchodźcami. Choć muzułmanie stanowią niewielką część ogółu osób wierzących w Polsce to sam islam zyskuje na znaczeniu w niektórych środowiskach jako element debaty publicznej, akademickiej czy edukacyjnej.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to discuss the current state of the development of Islam in Poland. The author has adopted a geographical perspective, focusing on the distribution of followers of this religion, the locations of places of worship, and the impact of contemporary migration on the growth of Islam in Poland. The primary sources of information were statistical data from various public and religious institutions; supported by a thorough literature and internet review. The number of Muslims in Poland has been estimated at approximately 35,000 individuals. The study demonstrates that Islam in Poland has two distinct faces: a historical one, associated with the Tatars, and a contemporary one, primarily related to migrants and refugees. Although Muslims constitute a small fraction of the overall religious population in Poland, Islam itself is gaining significance in certain circles as an element of public, academic, and educational discourse.
