Portret uwięzionego artysty: analiza doświadczenia więziennego w „Balladzie o więzieniu w Reading” i „De Profundis” Oscara Wilde’a oraz w dziele Petera Ackroyda pt. „The Last Testament of Oscar Wilde”

Praca skupia się na pobycie Oscara Wilde’a w więzieniu, co ukazane zostało w jego dwóch ostatnich utworach: „Balladzie o więzieniu w Reading” i „De Profundis” oraz w dziele Petera Ackroyda pt. „The Last Testament of Oscar Wilde”. Wymienione pozycje są analizowane pod względem wpływu doświadczeń więziennych na poglądy autora i struktury jego dzieł. Praca skupia się również na opisie doświadczenia więziennego wykreowanym przez autora i jego stosunku do systemu więziennego. Ma ona także na celu podkreślić istotę epizodu więziennego w jego życiu, które przed pobytem w więzieniu opierało się na filozofii „sztuki dla sztuki” estetyzmu. Więzienie, opisane zarówno jako fizyczna przestrzeń jak i nawiedzający koszmar, pozwoliło Wilde’owi odkryć wiele masek życia nieznanych mu dotąd, skłaniając go do refleksji and swoim dawnym życiem i życiem w uwięzieniu oraz wydobywając tym samym jego najprawdziwszą wersję siebie.

This dissertation focuses on Oscar Wilde’s imprisonment as presented in his two final works – The Ballad of Reading Gaol and De Profundis – and Peter Ackroyd’s The Last Testament of Oscar Wilde. These works are analysed with an eye to examining how the carceral experience affected the author’s views and the structure of his works. The analysis also delves into Wilde’s representation of the carceral reality and his attitude towards the prison system. Additionally, the goal of this thesis is to highlight the importance of incarceration in Wilde’s life that had been determined by the “art for art’s sake” philosophy of the Aesthetic Movement prior to his stay in prison. The prison, described both as a physical space and a haunting presence, unveiled countless masks of life to the author and, consequently, forced Wilde to reassess his pre-carceral and prison life, and reveal his authentic inner side.
