"The Last Soviet Poet": The Past and Present in the Works of Boris Ryzhy

Borys Ryży, jekaterynburski poeta tworzący na przełomie XX i XXI wieku, pomimo krótkiego okresu aktywności twórczej pozostawił po sobie bogaty i spójny dorobek literacki. Jego poezja, silnie zakorzeniona w realiach sowieckiej oraz postsowieckiej Rosji, podejmuje refleksje nad kondycją człowieka uwikłanego w historię, pamięć i współczesność. Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest analizie problematyki temporalnej w wierszach tego autora, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem obecnej w nich dychotomii przeszłość-teraźniejszość. Rozdział pierwszy przedstawia pokrótce tło biograficzne twórczości poety. Odnosi się także do wykreowanego w wierszach obrazu dzieciństwa i młodości autora, a także ich związku z przestrzenią miejską i naturalną. Omówione zostały środki, za pomocą których budowany jest nastrój utworów. Rozdział ten zawiera także analizę powtarzających się w twórczości Ryżego motywów i symboli, za pomocą których wyraża swoje postrzeganie czasu. Z kolei w drugim rozdziale omówione zostały refleksje poety na temat rzeczywistości jemu współczesnej. Wykazano, że obraz teraźniejszości wyłaniający się z wierszy ukazuje swoistą ciągłość emocjonalną oraz tematyczną między minionym a obecnym, rozwijając niepokoje i nastroje obecne już w opisach dzieciństwa. Co więcej, doświadczenia bohatera lirycznego, skonkretyzowanego i wyposażonego przez Ryżego w jego własne cechy, pozwalają interpretować utwory poety jako w znaczącej mierze spójną całość. W trzecim rozdziale przedstawiono swoistą filozofię temporalną Ryżego, konstytuowaną poprzez schematy metamorfoz czasu i powtarzające się refleksje na temat sytuacji człowieka (tzw. stanu „egzystencjalnej bezdomności”). Rozważono również zasadność nadanego Ryżemu przez literaturoznawców określania „ostatni sowiecki poeta”. Podkreślono także jego znaczenie jako przejawu istotności tematyki temporalnej w twórczości Ryżego. Powyższe analizy pozwalają stwierdzić, że czas, rozumiany zarówno jako nieodłączny element postrzegania rzeczywistości, jak i doświadczenie historyczne oraz egzystencjalne, stanowi jedną z najważniejszych kategorii interpretacyjnych przedstawionych w pracy utworów.

Boris Ryzhy, a poet from Yekaterinburg writing at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, left behind a rich and coherent literary legacy despite his brief period of creative activity. His poetry, deeply rooted in the realities of Soviet and post-Soviet Russia, offers reflections on the human condition entangled in history, memory, and the present. This thesis is devoted to the analysis of temporal themes in the poet’s work, with particular focus on the dichotomy of past and present.The first chapter briefly presents the biographical background of the poet’s work. It also discusses the image of childhood and youth as constructed in his poetry, as well as their connection to urban and natural space. The devices used to create the atmosphere of the poems are analyzed, along with the recurring motifs and symbols through which Ryzhy expresses his perception of time.The second chapter examines the poet’s reflections on the reality of his own time. It demonstrates that the image of the present emerging from his poems reveals a specific emotional and thematic continuity between the past and the present, developing the anxieties and moods already present in the portrayals of childhood. Moreover, the experiences of the lyrical protagonist—concretely shaped and endowed by Ryzhy with his own traits—allow for the interpretation of the poems as a largely coherent whole.The third chapter presents Ryzhy’s distinctive temporal philosophy, formed through patterns of temporal metamorphosis and recurring reflections on the human condition, particularly the state of so-called “existential homelessness.” The chapter also considers the validity of the label “the last Soviet poet” ascribed to Ryzhy by literary scholars and further, it’s significance as evidence of the central role of temporality in his work is emphasized.The analyses presented in this thesis lead to the conclusion that time—understood both as an inseparable element of perceiving reality and as a historical and existential experience—is one of the most important interpretive categories in the works discussed.
