The Literariness of Czech Athletes' Biographies: Between Documentary and (Self-)Creation of Character

Celem niniejszej pracy jest przeprowadzenie formalno-treściowej analizy siedmiu wybranych biografii czeskich sportowców z perspektywy literaturoznawczej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ich cech literackich. Główna teza pracy zakłada, że biografie i autobiografie współczesnych postaci kultury masowej, jakimi są sportowcy, mogą być postrzegane jako pełnoprawne dzieła literackie – w niektórych przypadkach nawet zaliczane do literatury pięknej. Kluczowym aspektem badania jest funkcja i sposób kreowania głównego bohatera oraz jego odbiór przez czytelnika. Pierwszy rozdział przedstawia teoretyczne ujęcie biografii jako gatunku. Drugi rozdział koncentruje się na wyjaśnieniu powszechnie panującego fenomenu sportowców. Trzeci rozdział stanowi analizę wybranych siedmiu biografii i autobiografii czeskich sportowców. Są to: Emil Zátopek, Dana Zátopková, Milan Baroš, Matrina Navrátilová, Jaromír Jágr, Milan Špinka oraz David Drahonínský. W pierwszej części tego rozdziału zaprezentowałam sylwetki wymienionych sportowców, uwzględniając ich sportowe sukcesy oraz dane biograficzne. W drugiej części przeanalizowałam książki pod kątem: języka, narracji, kreacji bohatera oraz obecności sportu jako elementu konstrukcyjnego fabuły i narracji w danej książce.

The aim of this thesis is to conduct a formal and thematic analysis of seven selected biographies of Czech athletes from a literary studies perspective, with particular emphasis on their literary features. The main thesis assumes that the biographies and autobiographies of contemporary mass culture figures—such as athletes—can be regarded as fully-fledged literature, and in some cases even classified as works of belles lettres. A key aspect of the study is the function and mode of constructing the main character, as well as how the character is perceived by the reader. The first chapter presents a theoretical framework of biography as a literary genre. The second chapter focuses on explaining the widespread cultural phenomenon of athletes and their media representation. The third chapter offers a detailed analysis of seven selected biographies and autobiographies of Czech athletes: Emil Zátopek, Dana Zátopková, Milan Baroš, Martina Navrátilová, Jaromír Jágr, Milan Špinka, and David Drahonínský. In the first part of this chapter, I introduce the profiles of these athletes, including their sporting achievements and biographical background. In the second part, I analyze the selected books with regard to language, narrative structure, character construction, and the role of sport as a structural and thematic element within the plot and narration of each work.
