Intercultural competence in teaching Polish as a foreign language to Chinese students (at B1 level) using the topic of housing as an example

Praca analizuje rolę kompetencji międzykulturowej w nauczaniu języka polskiego jako obcego studentów z Chin na poziomie B1. Skupia się na temacie „mieszkanie” jako przykładzie pojęcia codziennego, które może powodować trudności językowe i kulturowe. W części teoretycznej omówiono znaczenie komunikacji międzykulturowej oraz bariery, jakie mogą pojawić się w procesie nauki. Badania przeprowadzono metodą mieszaną: zastosowano ankietę oraz wywiad pogłębiony z chińską studentką. Wyniki wskazują, że studenci mają trudności z opisem przestrzeni mieszkalnej z powodu różnic kulturowych oraz braku odpowiedniego słownictwa w podręcznikach. Praca podkreśla konieczność wprowadzania do dydaktyki realistycznych scenariuszy i treści kulturowych, które wspierają rozwój kompetencji międzykulturowej i ułatwiają adaptację językową.

The thesis analyzes the role of intercultural competence in teaching Polish as a foreign language to Chinese students at the B1 level. It focuses on the topic of “housing” as an example of an everyday concept that may cause linguistic and cultural difficulties. The theoretical part discusses the importance of intercultural communication and the barriers that may arise during the learning process. The research was conducted using a mixed-method approach, including a questionnaire and an in-depth interview with a Chinese student. The results show that students struggle to describe living spaces due to cultural differences and the lack of appropriate vocabulary in textbooks. The thesis emphasizes the need to introduce realistic scenarios and cultural content into teaching in order to support the development of intercultural competence and facilitate language adaptation.
