The importance of the Korean Demilitarized Zone for political, humanitarian and social relations between North Korea and South Korea

Praca poświęcona jest analizie koreańskiej Strefy Zdemilitaryzowanej (DMZ) jako wielowymiarowej przestrzeni o znaczeniu politycznym, humanitarnym i społecznym w kontekście relacji pomiędzy Koreą Północną a Koreą Południową. Celem pracy było ukazanie DMZ nie tylko jako przestrzeni militarnej równowagi, lecz także jako miejsca symbolicznego dialogu, historycznego pojednania i potencjalnego współistnienia. W pracy przeanalizowano genezę i uwarunkowania powstania DMZ w wyniku wojny koreańskiej (1950–1953), której skutkiem był trwały podział Półwyspu Koreańskiego. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono roli DMZ jako instrumentowi dyplomacji i negocjacji, uwzględniając m.in szczyty międzykoreańskie, a także jej funkcji humanitarnej, na przykładzie spotkań rodzin rozdzielonych przez konflikt. Poruszono również tematykę turystyczno-społecznego wymiaru strefy. Praca została oparta na metodzie analizy jakościowej, wykorzystując literaturę przedmiotu, dokumenty ONZ oraz materiały prasowe. Wnioski pracy potwierdzają postawioną hipotezę, zgodnie z którą DMZ odgrywa kluczową rolę nie tylko w zachowaniu równowagi militarnej, lecz także w promowaniu idei pojednania i współpracy na podzielonym półwyspie. Pomimo, że pozostaje miejscem napięć i potencjalnego konfliktu, pełni także funkcję pomostu między wrogimi stronami oraz ważnego symbolu wspólnej pamięci i nadziei na pokojową przyszłość.

The subject of the thesis is the analysis of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) as a multidimensional space of political, humanitarian and social significance in the context of relations between North Korea and South Korea. The aim of the study was to present the DMZ not only as a space of military balance, but also as a place of symbolic dialogue, historical reconciliation and potential coexistence. The thesis analyses the genesis and conditions of the creation of the DMZ as a result of the Korean War (1950–1953), which resulted in the permanent division of the Korean Peninsula. Particular attention is given to the role of the DMZ as an instrument of diplomacy and negotiations, including inter-Korean summits, as well as its humanitarian function, using the example of meetings of families separated by the conflict. The subject of the tourist and social dimension of the zone is also discussed. The thesis was based on the method of qualitative analysis, using the literature on the subject, UN documents and press materials. The conclusions of the paper confirm the hypothesis that the DMZ plays a key role not only in maintaining the military balance, but also in promoting the idea of reconciliation and cooperation on the divided peninsula. Although it remains a place of tension and potential conflict, it also serves as a bridge between the hostile parties and an important symbol of shared memory and hope for a peaceful future.
