Park Chung-hee's influence on the shaping of the technology sector in the Republic of Korea, with a special focus on the role of chaebols

Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie wpływu polityki gospodarczej Park Chung-hee na rozwój sektora technologicznego w Korei Południowej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem czeboli jako strategicznych partnerów państwa w procesie modernizacji. W tym celu przeanalizowano literaturę historyczną i ekonomiczną dotyczącą okresu rządów Parka oraz rozwoju największych konglomeratów, takich jak Samsung, Hyundai, LG czy POSCO. W pracy wykazano, że autorytarne rządy umożliwiły sprawne wdrażanie reform industrializacyjnych, a ścisła współpraca państwa z sektorem prywatnym stworzyła fundamenty pod ekspansję technologiczną. Czebole stały się nie tylko filarami gospodarki, lecz także narzędziem budowania globalnego wizerunku państwa oraz źródłem jego soft power. Wyniki analizy wskazują, że dziedzictwo epoki Parka wciąż odgrywa istotną rolę w strukturze gospodarczej i pozycji międzynarodowej Korei Południowej.

This paper focuses on analysing the impact of Park Chung-hee’s economic policies on the development of South Korea’s technology sector, with particular emphasis on the role of chaebols as strategic partners of the state in the modernisation process. Accordingly, the research is based on historical and economic literature addressing Park Chung-hee’s presidency and the growth of major conglomerates such as Samsung, Hyundai, LG, and POSCO. The study demonstrates that Park’s authoritarian rule enabled the swift implementation of industrial reforms, while close cooperation between the state and the private sector laid the foundation for technological expansion. Chaebols emerged not only as pillars of the Korean economy but also as key instruments for shaping the country’s global image and enhancing its soft power. The results indicate that the legacy of Park’s era continues to influence South Korea's economic structure and international standing.
