The Role of Active Cosmetic Ingredients in Supporting the Treatment of Acne Vulgaris and Post-Acne Hyperpigmentation – A Systematic Literature Review

Celem niniejszej pracy był przegląd systematyczny literatury dotyczący roli składników aktywnych kosmetyków we wspomaganiu terapii trądziku pospolitego i przebarwień potrądzikowych. W części teoretycznej skupiono się na wyjaśnieniu podstawowych zagadnień dotyczących trądziku pospolitego i przebarwień potrądzikowych, a w kolejnej części skonstruowano tabele ze składnikami aktywnymi kosmetyków, mogącymi pełnić rolę wspomagającą leczenie trądziku i przebarwień potrądzikowych. Dane z publikacji naukowych zestawiono w tabeli z danymi z popularnej bazy COSING i wykazano, że składniki aktywne stosowane w kosmetykach wykazują potencjał terapeutyczny we wspomaganiu leczenia trądziku pospolitego oraz redukcji przebarwień pozapalnych. Istnieje częściowa zgodność między danymi literaturowymi a funkcjami przypisanymi składnikom w bazie COSING, zwłaszcza w przypadku powszechnie stosowanych substancji, takich jak niacynamid, kwas salicylowy lub witamina C. Niektóre składniki o potwierdzonym działaniu nie zostały jednoznacznie sklasyfikowane w bazie COSING, co może świadczyć o jej ograniczeniach w zakresie aktualności i precyzji funkcji przypisywanych substancjom.

The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic literature review on the role of active cosmetic ingredients in supporting the treatment of acne vulgaris and post-acne hyperpigmentation. The theoretical part focused on explaining the fundamental issues related to acne vulgaris and post-acne discoloration, while the following section included tables listing active cosmetic ingredients that may play a supportive role in the treatment of acne and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Data from scientific publications were compiled in a table alongside data from the popular COSING database, demonstrating that active ingredients used in cosmetics show therapeutic potential in supporting the treatment of acne vulgaris and reducing post-inflammatory discoloration. There is partial consistency between the literature data and the functions assigned to ingredients in the COSING database, especially in the case of commonly used substances such as niacinamide, salicylic acid, and vitamin C. Some ingredients with confirmed activity have not been clearly classified in the COSING database, which may indicate its limitations regarding the currency and precision of the functions attributed to the substances.
