Adapting "Anne" as a "Bildungsroman" : "Anne of Green Gables" at the Teatr Współczesny in Szczecin (2018)

Przedmiotem szkicu jest adaptacja teatralna Ani z Zielonego Wzgórza dokonana przeze mnie we współpracy z reżyserem Markiem Pasiecznym dla Teatru Współczesnego w Szczecinie (premiera 2018) na podstawie autorskiego przekładu tekstu oryginalnego. Omówiona zostaje najpierw najczęściej wykorzystywana od lat 60. adaptacja Ani Andrzeja Konica, oparta na przestarzałym przekładzie R. Bernsteinowej; przeprowadzona analiza wykazuje, że Konic dokonał właściwie jedynie fabularnego skrótu powieści, bez szczególnego pomysłu interpretacyjnego, w efekcie tekst Montgomery uległ znacznemu spłyceniu. Dowodzi to zasadności stworzenia nowej adaptacji. Podstawą tej ostatniej była najpierw analiza postaci bohaterki i cech, które są dla niej konstytutywne (bujna wyobraźnia, wrażliwość na piękno przyrody, wrażliwość literacka i emocjonalna, intensywne przeżywanie świata, impulsywność, żywiołowość, energia i spontaniczność), a następnie interpretacja tekstu jako Bildungsroman. Osią dramaturgiczną spektaklu stał się tym samym proces dorastania bohaterki, co z kolei pozwoliło zdefiniować kluczową rolę, jaką odgrywa relacja Ani z Mateuszem Cuthbertem: to dzięki niemu i jego niezachwianej w nią wierze Ania może pokonać drogę wiodącą od niepewnej, egzaltowanej i niezrównoważonej emocjonalnie dziewczynki do samodzielnej, mającej poczucie własnej wartości dorastającej dziewczyny, zdolnej wziąć odpowiedzialność za siebie i za innych. Proces dorastania został ukazany w perspektywie tej relacji, poprzez ekspozycję symbolicznych „mocnych punktów”, z których najistotniejszym jest śmierć Mateusza, stanowiąca jednocześnie klamrę spektaklu (retrospekcja wspomnień Ani).

The subject of this article is my stage adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, made in collaboration with director Marek Pasieczny for the Contemporary Theatrein Szczecin (premiere 2018), based on my translation of the original text. The adaptation of Anne by Andrzej Konic, which has been most often used since the ‘60s, based on R. Bernsteinowa’s outdated translation, is discussed first; the analysis shows that Konic made only a plot abridgement of the novel, without any particular interpretive idea; as a result, Montgomery’s text has been significantly shallowed. This proves the legitimacy of creating a new adaptation. The basis for the latter was first to analyse the character of the heroine and the qualities that are constitutive for her (vivid imagination, sensitivity to the beauty of nature, literary and emotional sensitivity, intense experience of the world, impulsiveness, vivacity, energy and spontaneity), and then to interpret the text as a Bildungsroman. The dramatic axis of the play thus became the heroine’s coming of age, which in turn made it possible to define the key role played by Anne’s relationship with Matthew Cuthbert: it is thanks to him and his unwavering faith in her that Anne can walk the path leading from an insecure, excitable and emotionally unbalanced girl to an independent, self-esteemed adolescent, able to take responsibility for herself and others. The coming of age was shown in the perspective of this relationship, through the exposition of symbolic “strong points”, the most significant of which is Matthew’s death, which serves as a frame of the play (a flashback to Anne’s memories).
