Karaims in Kiev and their tobacco factories and kenesa in the 19th-20th centuries

W artykule przedstawiono historię osadnictwa karaimskiego w Kijowie począwszy od X wieku, ale głównie w drugiej połowie XIX i pierwszej połowie XX wieku, kiedy miasto znajdowało się na terenie Imperium Rosyjskiego. Następnie omawiana jest działalność zawodowa tego środowiska, obejmująca przede wszystkim produkcję i sprzedaż wyrobów tytoniowych, w którą zaangażowane były karaimskie rodziny, takie jak Kogen, Egiz i Duwan, aż do okresu przejęcia władzy w Rosji przez władze sowieckie. Opisana jest również historia kijowskiej kienezy i jej wnętrza aż do dnia dzisiejszego.

The article presents the history of Karaim settlement in Kiev starting from the 10th century, but mainly in the second half of the 19th and first half of the 20th century, when the city was in the Russian Empire. Then, the professional activity of this community is discussed, including primarily the production and sale of tobacco products, in which Karaim families such as Kogen, Egiz and Duwan were involved, up until the period when the Soviet authorities took over power in Russia. The history of the Kiev kenesa and its interior up to the present day is also described.
