The history of Queen Jadwiga of Anjou's Wawel tomb through the eyes of an archaeologist

W artykule szczegółowej analizie poddano najstarsze przekazy pisane oraz wyniki badań archeologicznych dotyczące przekształceń grobu królowej Jadwigi Andegaweńskiej, które miały miejsce w epoce przed beatyfikacją i kanonizacją pierwszej małżonki Władysława Jagiełły. W wyniku tej analizy należy uznać, że doczesne szczątki królowej Jadwigi Andegaweńskiej wraz z córeczką Elżbietą-Bonifacją musiały być pierwotnie, tj. 19 lipca 1399 roku, pochowane pod posadzką w podwyższonej lewej partii gotyckiego prezbiterium katedry krakowskiej i przykryte płaską płytą nagrobną wpuszczoną w poziom posadzki, którą ze względu na napór pielgrzymów już przed 1426 rokiem musiano odgrodzić i otoczyć żelazną kratą.

The article provides a detailed analysis of the oldest written records and the results of archaeological research regarding the transformations of the tomb of Queen Jadwiga of Anjou, which took place in the period before the beatification and canonization of Władysław Jagiełło's first wife. As a result of this analysis, it should be considered that the earthly remains of Queen Jadwiga of Anjou, along with her daughter Elizabeth-Boniface, must have originally, that is, on July 19, 1399, been buried beneath the floor in the elevated left part of the Gothic presbytery of Kraków Cathedral and covered by a flat tomb slab set into the floor level. Due to the pressure of pilgrims, this tomb had to be fenced off and surrounded by an iron grate even before 1426.
