Władysław Semkowicz as a founder of modern auxiliary sciences of history : reflections on the seventy-fifth anniversary of his death

Władysław Semkowicz (1878-1949) był najwybitniejszym polskim badaczem nauk pomocniczych historii, autorem skryptu-podręcznika Encyklopedia nauk pomocniczych historii, określającym polski kanon tych dyscyplin. Był organizatorem systematycznych badań, zwłaszcza w zakresie genealogii średniowiecznych rodów rycerskich w Polsce i na Litwie, geografii historycznej, Atlasu Historycznego Polski, dyplomatyki, paleografii i nowoczesnego edytorstwa źródeł. Wykształcił liczne grono badaczy nauk pomocniczych historii, a z Katedry i Gabinetu Nauk Pomocniczych Historii UJ uczynił centrum badań.

Władysław Semkowicz (1878-1949) was the most eminent Polish researcher in the auxiliary sciences of history and the author of the textbook Encyklopedia nauk pomocniczych historii (Encyclopedia of the Auxiliary Sciences of History), defi ning the Polish canon of these disciplines. He organised systematic research, especially into the genealogy of medieval knightly families in Poland and Lithuania, historical geography, the Historical Atlas of Poland, diplomatics, palaeography and modern source editing. He educated numerous researchers in the auxiliary history sciences and made the Department and the Offi ce of the Auxiliary Sciences of History at the Jagiellonian University a research centre.
