Przedmiotem badań niniejszej pracy jest ambiwalentny charakter programowego tekstu ,,Die Moderne” autorstwa Hermanna Bahra. Celem jest znalezienie i zestawienie zarówno występujących w tekście aspektów dekadentyzmu, jak i elementów przedstawiających pełną optymizmu atmosferę przełomu wieków. Pierwszy rozdział jest poświęcony przedstawieniu ogólnego zarysu epoki około roku 1900. Kolejna część zawiera zwięzłą biografię Hermanna Bahra i podstawowe informacje o jego eseju ,,Die Moderne”. Dwa kolejne rozdziały pracy stanowią analizę tekstu programowego. W pierwszej kolejności przedstawiono cechy dekadentyzmu. Następnie, opisane zostały znalezione w tekście wyznaczniki pełnej wiary i nadziei wizji przyszłości. Praca została zakończona podsumowaniem wyników badań.

The subject of this thesis is the ambivalent character of the programmatic text "Die Moderne" by Hermann Bahr. The aim is to find and compile both decadent aspects of the text and elements representing a positive attitude to the future at the turn of the century. The first chapter is devoted to providing an overview of the era around 1900. The next part contains a brief biography of Hermann Bahr and basic information about his essay “Die Moderne”. The two subsequent chapters are an analysis of the programmatic text. First, the features of decadence are presented. Then, the determinants of a faithful and hopeful vision of the future found in the text are described. The thesis concludes with a summary of the research results.

Die vorliegende Arbeit setzt sich mit dem ambivalenten Charakter von Hermann Bahrs programmatischem Text „Die Moderne“ auseinander. Das Ziel dieser Untersuchung ist es, sowohl die im Text auftretenden Elemente der Dekadenz als auch die Ausdrücke der positiven Aufbruchstimmung zu finden und zusammenzustellen. Das erste Kapitel ist der Darstellung der Grundzüge der Epoche um 1900 gewidmet. Der nächste Teil betrachtet die kurze Biografie von Hermann Bahr und die grundsätzlichen Informationen über sein Essay „Die Moderne“. Zwei weitere Abschnitte sind die Analyse von programmatischem Text. Zuerst werden Aspekte der Dekadenz untersucht. Danach folgt die Beschreibung der optimistischen Elemente, die im Aufsatz zu finden sind. Am Ende der Arbeit wird eine Zusammenfassung der Ergebnisse formuliert.
