Vampire who has changed history : Serbian speculative fiction in the XXI century

Celem niniejszego tekstu jest zarysowanie pewnych ogólnych tendencji w szeroko obecnym w Serbii nurcie, jakim jest fantastyka gatunkowa, na podstawie wybranych dzieł trzech uznanych współczesnych autorów: Aleksandra Tešicia, Dejana Stojiljkovicia i Gorana Skrobonji. Punktem wyjścia dla rozważań jest rozpoznanie, że w serbskiej fantastyce szczególną popularność zyskał nurt lokalny, osadzony w znanym czytelnikowi kontekście, zaś najczęściej podejmowanym w utworach zagadnieniem jest kwestia namysłu nad serbską historią, zarówno nieodległą, jak i dawną. Wyobrażenia odmiennych dróg rozwojowych serbskich dziejów wydają się mieć jednak przede wszystkim charakter kompensacyjny i eskapistyczny, w duchu literatury popularnej, rzadziej zaś omawiane utwory proponują krytyczny namysł i subwersywny stosunek wobec istniejących w świadomości społecznej narracji o historii.

Speculative fiction has become a prominent and influential genre within the Serbian literary scene. The paper delves into the realm of Serbian contemporary speculative fiction with a particular focus on narratives that grapple with the complexities of Serbia’s historical past. Through an analysis of chosen literary works of three popular authors (Aleksandar Tešić, Dejan Stojiljković and Goran Skrobonja) the study explores how Serbian speculative fiction engages with and reimagines historical events, characters, and trajectories, shedding light on how speculative fiction, particularly within genres like fantasy and alternative history, serves as a powerful tool for discussing perspectives on history. Imagining different ways in which history could unfold in Serbian contemporary speculative fiction seems to be more often escapist and compensatory, providing alternative narratives that address historical gaps or injustices, rather than critical, fostering a nuanced understanding of the past and present. It is visible that nowadays the fantastic genres are primarily embraced as popular literature for entertainment.
