In the footsteps of king Arthur and the Holy Grail : the old French arthurian novel and its contribution to the shaping of European civilisation

Artykuł ukazuje wkład starofrancuskiej powieści arturiańskiej w kształtowanie cywilizacji europejskiej. Pod wpływem jej oddziaływania, cywilizacja ta - na długie stulecia - została ubogacona o następujące aspekty: etos rycerski (oparty na chrześcijańskiej wizji człowieka i społeczeństwa), ideę solidarności i wdzięczności, entuzjazm odkrywania świata i człowieka, konstruktywną wizję samotności, ubogacającą symbiozę sacrum i profanum, dowartościowanie roli kobiety.

This article discusses the contribution of the Old French Arthurian novel to the shaping of European civilisation. Influenced by this novel, European civilisation was enriched for centuries in various aspects: the ethos of chivalry (rooted in the Christian vision of man and society); the concepts of solidarity and gratitude; a passion of exploration and understanding of both the world and human nature; a constructive view of solitude that enriched symbiosis of the sacred and the profane; the appreciation of the role of women.
