The chapter foregrounds the identity of eighteenth-century British literature as enmeshed within a dynamic intercultural traffic, including outside influences and transmissions of new paradigms of literary practice into other cultural and national contexts. To facilitate the mapping of the temporally and geographically expansive network of interactions in which eighteenth-century British literary texts have been engaged, this chapter both offers an overview of terminology used to discuss such cultural transfers and proposes the term transplantation, borrowed from medical and horticultural discourses and evocative of eighteenth-century experiments in gardening, as a useful kinetic model to conceptualize a range of practices involved in relocating a literary text into a new cultural environment.
