The Romantic Image of a Medieval Knight based on "Grażyna" and "Konrad Wallenrod" by Adam Mickiewicz

Praca podejmuje problem wizerunku średniowiecznego rycerza oraz jego etosu i literackiej charakterystyki z perspektywy romantycznej wizji świata. Refleksja opiera się na analizie bohaterów poematów Adama Mickiewicza: "Grażyna" i "Konrad Wallenrod". Pierwszy rozdział przedstawia przyczyny fascynacji wiekami średnimi w epoce romantyzmu, motywy i wzorce obecne w ówczesnej literaturze zachodnioeuropejskiej, które przeniknęły na grunt polski. Ukazana została także biografia Mickiewicza do momentu wybuchu powstania listopadowego, a więc w okresie, kiedy powstały dzieła interpretowane w niniejszej pracy. Kolejny rozdział prezentuje analizę postaci rycerzy obecnych w utworze "Grażyna". Przedstawiony został konflikt między Litaworem a Grażyną (oraz Rymwidem), a także racje, jakimi kierują się bohaterowie. Ostatni rozdział skupia się na postaci Waltera-Wallenroda: ewolucja bohatera od rycerza chrześcijańskiego do zdrajcy-spiskowca stanowi istotę dzieła. Analiza omawianych dzieł pozwala uchwycić ewolucję twórczości Mickiewicza, znaczoną poszukiwaniami optymalnej formy romantycznej. Praca ukazuje także sposób postrzegania średniowiecza przez polskich twórców romantycznych.

The work addresses the problem of the image of the medieval knight and his ethos and literary characteristics from the perspective of the Romantic vision of the world. The reflection is based on the analysis of the characters in Adam Mickiewicz's poems: “Grażyna” and “Konrad Wallenrod”. The first chapter presents the reasons for the fascination with the Middle Ages in the Romantic era, the motifs and patterns present in the Western European literature of that time, which penetrated Polish culture. It also presents Mickiewicz's biography until the outbreak of the November Uprising, i.e. in the period when the works interpreted in this study were created. The next chapter presents an analysis of the characters of the knights present in “Grażyna”. The conflict between Litawor and Grażyna (and Rymwid) is presented, as well as the reasons that guide the characters. The last chapter focuses on the character of Walter-Wallenrod: the evolution of the character from a Christian knight to a traitor-conspirator is the essence of “Konrad Wallenrod”. The analysis of the discussed poems allows us to capture the evolution of Mickiewicz's work, marked by the search for the optimal romantic form. The research also shows the way in which the Middle Ages was perceived by Polish romantic artists.
