Music, drugs and sexuality in the hippie movement

Przedmiotem pracy jest ruch hipisowski w Stanach Zjednoczonych w latach 60. XX w., ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem muzyki, używek oraz nowych koncepcji związanych z seksualnością. Poprzez analizę literatury przedmiotu, w rozprawie ukazano wartości ruchu hipisowskiego oraz kluczowe aspekty, które miały wpływ na jego kształtowanie. Praca przedstawia genezę ruchu, jego związek z ruchem beatników oraz różnorodność wewnątrz hipisowskich społeczności, stosunek hipisów do substancji odurzających, wpływ muzyki na kształt kultury hipisowskiej oraz nowe rozumienie seksualności przez członków i członkinie ruchu. Praca zwraca również uwagę na najważniejsze postacie, które odegrały znaczącą rolę w kreowaniu i rozwoju ruchu hipisowskiego, takie jak Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary czy Bob Dylan, oraz analizuje twórczość wybranych artystów lat 60. XX wieku, która wpłynęła na wartości wyznawane przez hipisów. W rozprawie uwzględniony został także wątek rewolucji seksualnej oraz koncepcja „wolnej miłości”, która była jednym z fundamentów ideologicznych ruchu.

This thesis explores the values upheld by the hippie movement that emerged in the United States during the 1960s in the USA, with a particular focus on music, drug use, and sexuality. Through a thorough analysis of scholarly texts, the thesis highlights the values of the movement and the key aspects that influenced its formation. It includes an overview of the origins of the hippie movement, its connection with the Beatniks, the internal diversity within hippie communities, the hippies’ attitudes towards drug use, the influence of music on the movement’s identity, and the members’ approach to sexuality. The thesis further highlights important figures who contributed to shaping the identity of the hippie movement, such as Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, and Bob Dylan, and analyzes the works of selected 1960s artists who influenced the values embraced by the hippies. Additionally, the thesis addresses the theme of the sexual revolution and the concept of “free love” which was one of the ideological foundations of the movement.
