Contemporary reception of the devil motif based on Mike Carey's Lucifer series

Celem pracy jest analiza popkulturowej reinterpretacji postaci diabła na przykładzie serialu Lucyfer (2016-2021), będącego adaptacją komiksu Neila Gaimana i Sama Kietha. Serial przedstawia Lucyfera Morningstara, który opuszcza piekło, by rozpocząć życie w Los Angeles. W pracy badano, jak serial wykorzystuje medium telewizyjne do ukazania przemiany bohatera, a także jakie kulturowe percepcje diabła wpływają na tę interpretację. Kluczowym aspektem analizy jest motyw przemiany Lucyfera, zwłaszcza w kontekście jego trudnej relacji z ojcem, co prowadzi do reinterpretacji postaci szatana jako bytu bardziej ludzkiego i skomplikowanego. Serial przedstawia Lucyfera jako postać zagubioną, poszukującą tożsamości, której bunt przeciwko Bogu wynika z głęboko przeżywanych emocji. Praca wykorzystuje metodologię badań literackich i analizy serialu jako tekstu kultury, ukazując, jak Lucyfer dekoduje tradycyjne narracje religijne i tworzy postmodernistyczny obraz diabła, będącego jednocześnie antagonistą, bohaterem i przewodnikiem po ludzkich emocjach. W ramach analizy przeprowadzono przegląd literatury dotyczącej interpretacji serialu jako medium oraz wizerunku diabła.

The objective of this paper is to examine the manner in which popular culture has reinterpreted the figure of the devil, with the Lucifer series (2016-2021) serving as a case study. The series is an adaptation of a comic book created by Neil Gaiman and Sam Kieth. The series portrays the character of Lucifer Morningstar, who leaves Hell to commence an existence in Los Angeles. This paper examines how the series employs the medium of television to depict the character's metamorphosis and the extent to which cultural perceptions of the devil shape this portrayal. A significant element of the analysis is the motif of Lucifer's transformation, particularly in the context of his challenging relationship with his father. This leads to a reinterpretation of the figure of Satan as a more human and nuanced entity. The series portrays Lucifer as a character who is adrift in search of identity, whose rebellion against God is driven by deeply experienced emotions. This paper employs a methodology of literary research and analysis of the series as a cultural text. It demonstrates how Lucifer decodes traditional religiousnarratives, thereby creating a postmodern image of the devil who is, simultaneously, an antagonist, protagonist and guide to human emotions. The analysis comprises a literature review on the interpretation of the series as a medium and the image of the devil.
