The Polish language scattered all over the globe
This edited volume titled “Polish as a Heritage Language around the World: Selected Diaspora Communities” depicts Polish migrant communities scattered around the world and their endeavours in heritage language use, maintenance, and education. Diaspora communities are formed as a result of migration movements, which are motivated by economic, political, educational, and professional reasons. They face particular issues and challenges in supporting the intergenerational transmission of their heritage language through language maintenance and heritage language education initiatives, especially when the language involved is not one that has high visibility and status in the surrounding society (Romanowski, 2021). Therefore, when the language in question is of a lesser international status, with a comparatively smaller source community/culture less resourced or less willing to assist its diaspora in such efforts, how does this impact the maintenance of the heritage language and affect the capacity to support biliteracy development among younger generations of speakers? This is the overarching question to be addressed in the present volume in the context of the Polish language.
