Powyższa praca ma na celu analizę powieści Daphne du Maurier jako przykładu powieści gotyckiej ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem sposobu, w jaki autorka kreuje miejsca akcji w swojej powieści „Oberża na pustkowiu”. Wstęp skupia się na wyjaśnieniu wagi tego tematu i przedstawieniu przyczyn zainteresowania Daphne du Maurier gotycyzmem. Pierwszy rozdział stanowi przegląd fabuły „Oberży na pustkowiu” oraz analizę elementów gotyckich występujących w tej powieści. Głównym celem drugiego rozdziału jest zbadanie wykreowanych w powieści przestrzeni gotyckich, na które składają się karczma, wrzosowiska oraz morze. Do ich analizy zostają wprowadzone kategorie heterotopii, liminalności oraz niesamowitości.

This thesis aims to further contribute to the analysis of Daphne du Maurier’s novels as part of Gothic fiction by exploring how she writes about the setting of her novel Jamaica Inn so as to create the atmosphere of terror and suspense. The introduction is focused on explaining the importance of this topic and presenting the reasons for Daphne du Maurier’s interest in the Gothic. The first chapter provides an overview of Jamaica Inn’s plot and analyses Gothic elements appearing in this novel. In the second chapter the main aim is to examine the Gothic spaces introduced in the novel, which are the inn, the moors, and the sea, by applying the categories of heterotopia, liminality, and the uncanny.
