Syntactic aspects of intralingual translation in children's fairy tales: a comparative analysis of three versions of ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest procesowi przekładu wewnątrzjęzykowego we współczesnych wersjach tradycyjnych bajek, a dokładniej uproszczeniom składniowym. Teoretyczna część pracy wyjaśnia znaczenie składni w lekturze pierwszych książek oraz przedstawia kilka fenomenów składniowych, które mogą stwarzać problemy ze zrozumieniem u dzieci, w tym złożoność zdań, użycie form czasownikowych, konstrukcje typowe dla języka literackiego i zaimki anaforyczne. Część praktyczna porównuje trzy wersje „Pięknej i Bestii” według kryteriów określonych w części teoretycznej: wersję oryginalną (1756) oraz dwie wersje uproszczone (2012 i 2019).

This study focuses on the process of intralingual translation in modern versions of traditional fairy tales with a particular emphasis on syntactic simplification. The theoretical section of the work explains the importance of syntax in the reading of first books and presents several syntactic features that can create comprehension problems for children, including sentence complexity, the use of verb tenses, constructions typical of literary language and the use of anaphoric pronouns. The practical section compares three versions of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ according to the criteria discussed in the theoretical section : the original version (1756) and two simplified versions (2012 and 2019).

Le présent mémoire porte sur le processus de l’adaptation intralinguistique dans les versions modernes des contes traditionnels et, plus précisément, sur la simplification syntaxique. La partie théorique du travail explique l’importance de la syntaxe dans la lecture des premiers livres et présente plusieurs phénomènes syntaxiques qui peuvent poser des problèmes de compréhension aux enfants, notamment la complexité des phrases, l’emploi des formes verbales, certaines constructions typiques de la langue littéraire ou encore les pronoms anaphoriques. La partie pratique compare trois versions du conte « La Belle et La Bête » selon les critères exposés dans la partie théorique : la version originale (1756) et deux versions simplifiées (2012 et 2019).
