Sensitive Viking or ruthless killer? Emotion as a message on the example of "Egil's Saga"

Celem pracy licencjackiej jest analiza i interpretacja wybranych sytuacji z „Sagi o Egilu” ukazujących emocje tytułowego bohatera, koncentrując się na aspekcie emocji jako komunikatów. Pierwszy rozdział poświęcony jest sagom islandzkim, ich pochodzeniu i podziałowi oraz znaczeniu dla narodu islandzkiego. W rozdziale teoretycznym zaprezentowano czym są emocje w kontekście psychologicznym, podejmując przede wszystkim temat objawów somatycznych. Omówiono także wybrane sposoby przedstawiania emocji w sagach staronordyckich. Jako metodę badawczą zastosowano założenia narratologii. Analizując emocje Egila ukazano ich funkcję komunikacyjną oraz przedstawiono wysoką emocjonalność i wrażliwość bohatera.

The aim of the bachelor's thesis is to analyze and interpret selected situations from "Egil's Saga" that depict the emotions of the title character, focusing on the aspect of emotions as communicative messages.The first chapter is devoted to the Icelandic sagas, their origin and division, and their significance for the Icelandic nation.The theoretical chapter presents what emotions are in a psychological context, concentrating primarily on the topic of somatic symptoms. Selected methods of presenting emotions in Old Norse sagas are also discussed. The principles of narratology were used as the research method. By analyzing Egil's emotions, their communicative function was shown and the hero's high emotionality and sensitivity were presented.
