Pre-modern Japanese literature in Poland : a survey of Polish translations of classical Japanese literature (published until 2020)

The paper contains an annotated list of direct Polish translations of the classical Japanese literature, understood as the entire writing from its beginnings to the year 1867. Only such works have been included that either constitute an autonomous book in the original and have been translated into Polish in full, or that have appeared in Poland as a separate volume even if the translation is not complete. The order of the list is principally chronological, according to the date of creation of the original work. The comments concern the actual content or the scope of the translation, doubts about its directness (from Japanese to Polish), presence or absence of the original text, other translations included in the same publication etc. This list is followed by a concise description of the state of translation of classical Japanese literature in Poland and of the most urgent desiderata in this respect. Finally, three indices are provided: of the authors, of the original titles and of the translators.
