"Now, now I know that was paradise." - The Paradise Motif in Wolfgang Borchert's Short Story "The Kitchen Clock"

Niniejsza praca licencjacka dotyczy motywu raju w opowiadaniu "Zegar kuchenny" Wolfganga Borcherta. Główne pojęcia to: raj, niebo, piekło, piekło II wojny światowej, wewnętrzne zniszczenia wojenne, rodzina, powrót do domu, topos syna marnotrawnego, matka. Punktem wyjścia przeprowadzonej analizy jest cytat głównego bohatera opowiadania: "Teraz, teraz wiem, że to był raj". Pytanie badawcze brzmi: w jakim stopniu doświadczenia wojenne zmieniły znaczenie raju dla bohaterów opowiadania? Chociaż zegar kuchenny jest centralnym obiektem symboliki, opowiadanie koncentruje się głównie na uzdrawiającej mocy nowo zdefiniowanej koncepcji raju. Tytułowy zegar kuchenny jest tak cenny, ponieważ kryje w sobie wspomnienia spokojnego życia rodzinnego w okresie przedwojennym. Niesie duchową wartość związanej z nim przeszłości, działając jak katalizator, który może uzdrowić straumatyzowanych i wewnętrznie zniszczonych wojennymi doznaniami ludzi. Niniejsza praca składa się z dwóch rozdziałów teoretycznych i dwóch rozdziałów analitycznych. Część teoretyczna dotyczy gatunku opowiadania i opisuje pojawiający się w europejskiej kulturze i tradycji obraz raju i piekła, a także obraz piekła podczas II wojny światowej. W części analitycznej rozszyfrowany został symbolizm, który jest kluczowy dla rozpoznania motywu raju w opowiadaniu. Analiza podzielona jest na dwa podrozdziały. Pierwszy dotyczy motywów związanych z materią zegara kuchennego (kolory, niezniszczona powierzchnia i zniszczony mechanizm wewnętrzny). Drugi skupia się na wspomnieniach, uczuciach i reakcjach, jakie zegar wywołuje w głównym bohaterze. Symbolika dotyczy wspomnień, uczuć, a także myśli głównego bohatera opowiadania związanych z zegarem kuchennym. Analiza symboliki ma na celu zdefiniowanie obrazu raju przedstawionego w opowiadaniu i zbadanie znaczenia raju dla duchowego uzdrowienia bohaterów. Praca udziela odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jakich dwóch aspektach doświadczenia wojenne zmieniły znaczenie raju dla bohaterów "Zegara kuchennego".

This Bachelor‘s thesis concentrates on the paradise motif in the short story “The Kitchen Clock” by Wolfgang Borchert. The main terms related to the topic of this paper are: paradise, heaven, hell, the hell of the Second World War, the internal damages caused to people by the war, family, homecoming, topos of the Prodigal Son, mother. The starting point of the analysis is the quote of the main character of the short story “Now, now I know that was paradise.” Through these words he expresses that only after he has survived the Second World War, he comprehends the value of the peaceful life he led before. Having seen the hell on Earth, he understands that his ordinary interactions with the mother in the kitchen at night were heavenly circumstances. The central research question of this paper is in what way the experiences of the war influenced the meaning of the paradise for the characters of the short story. Even though the kitchen clock is the main object of all the symbolism, the story focuses mostly on the heal-ing capability of the newly defined paradise. The title object – the kitchen clock – is so far important that it contains saved memories of the peaceful family life from the time before the war. The clock has a spiritual value of its story which acts as a catalyst for healing the people who are traumatized and internally damaged after the war. This paper contains of two theory chapters and two analysis chapters. The theoretical part concerns the art form of the short story and how it allows for interpretations. This part shows the traditional image of heaven (synonymous for paradise) and hell as well as the im-age of hell as the reality of the Second World War. The analysis part deciphers the symbolism of the short story that is necessary for describing the paradise motif. The analysis is divided into two subchapters. The first one concentrates on the motifs which are connected to the matter of the kitchen clock such as: colours, the untouched surface and the destroyed internal mechanism. The second subchapter focuses on the memories, feelings and reactions that the kitchen clock awakes in the main character of the story. Basing on the analysed symbolism, the image of the paradise shown in the short story is described. It is looked into what is the meaning of the paradise for the characters’ spiritual healing. Eventually, it is exposed in which two aspects the experiences of the Second World War influenced the meaning of the paradise for the characters of “The Kitchen Clock”.

Die vorliegende Bachelorarbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Paradiesmotiv in der Kurzgeschichte „Die Küchenuhr“ von Wolfgang Borchert. Die Hauptbegriffe sind: das Paradies, der Himmel, die Hölle, die Hölle des Zweiten Weltkriegs, die innerlichen Kriegszerstörungen, die Familie, die Heimkehr, der Topos des verlorenen Sohnes, die Mutter. Der Ausgangspunkt der Analyse bildet das Zitat der Hauptfigur der Kurzgeschichte: „Jetzt, jetzt weiß ich, daß es das Paradies war“. Die zentrale Forschungsfrage lautet: inwiefern die Kriegserlebnisse die Bedeutung des Paradieses für die Figuren in der Kurzgeschichte geändert haben. Obwohl die Küchenuhr der zentrale Gegenstand der Symbolik bildet, konzentriert sich die Kurzgeschichte hauptsächlich auf die heilende Macht der neudefinierten Begriff des Paradieses. Die Titelküchenuhr ist insofern wichtig, da in ihr die Erinnerungen an das friedliche Familienleben in der Vorkriegszeit konserviert sind. Sie trägt in sich den geistlichen Wert der mit ihr verbundenen, als ein Katalysator fungierenden Geschichte, welcher die nach dem Krieg traumatisierten und innerlich zerstörten Menschen wieder heilen kann. Diese Thesis besteht aus zwei Theorie-kapiteln und zwei Analysekapiteln. In der Theorieteil wird die Gattung Kurzgeschichte behandelt und das traditionelle Paradies- und Höllenbild sowie das Höllenbild des Zweiten Weltkriegs dargestellt. In dem Analyseteil wird die Symbolik, die für die Erkennung des Paradiesmotivs in der Kurzgeschichte die zentrale Bedeutung hat, entschlüsselt. Die Analyse wird in zwei Unterkapitel geteilt. Der erste beschäftigt sich mit den Motiven, die mit dem Stoff der Küchenuhr verbunden sind (Farben, unzerstörte Oberfläche und zerstörte innerliche Mechanismus). Der Zweite konzentriert sich auf die Erinnerungen, Gefühlen und Reaktionen, die die Uhr bei der Hauptfigur hervorruft. Die Symbolik bezieht sich auf die Küchenuhr und die mit ihr verbundenen Erinnerungen und von ihr aufgelöste Gefühle und Gedanken der Hauptfigur der Kurzgeschichte. Anhand der Symbolik wird das in der Kurzgeschichte dargestellte Paradiesbild definiert und die Bedeutung des Paradieses für die geistliche Heilung der Figuren untersucht. Anschließend wird gezeigt, in welchen zwei Aspekten die Kriegserlebnisse die Bedeutung des Paradieses für die Figuren in „Der Küchenuhr“ verändert haben.
