"You would be so pretty if you didn't scratch yourself". Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of experiences of the individuals with dermatillomania (pathological skin picking).

Niniejsza praca ma na celu opisanie subiektywnego przeżywania i doświadczania dermatillomanii (patologicznego skubania skóry) przez chorujące na nią osoby. Jest to zaburzenie polegające na powtarzającym się i kompulsywnym skubaniu skóry, powodującym niszczenie tkanek skórnych. We wstępie przedstawiono podstawowe informacje na temat choroby oraz przegląd badań jakościowych w tej dziedzinie. Dla celów badania przeprowadzono 14 pogłębionych wywiadów częściowo ustrukturyzowanych z osobami cierpiącymi na patologiczne skubanie skóry, które zgłosiły się do badania poprzez forum internetowe i zostały zakwalifikowane na podstawie wyniku otrzymanego w badaniu polską wersją kwestionariusza Skin Picking Scale - Revised (SPS-R). Następnie podjęto próbę interpretacji i nadawania znaczeń wypowiedziom zaczerpniętym z rozmów, w oparciu o metodę Interpretacyjnej Analizy Fenomenologicznej (IPA). Sekcja wyniki opisuje opracowane tematycznie najważniejsze aspekty przeżywania zaburzenia – przebieg epizodów skubania, ich przyczyny i konsekwencje, sposoby radzenia sobie z zaburzeniem, przeżywanie swojego wyglądu, powodowane chorobą utraty oraz korzyści z niej, jak również konteksty życia osób badanych – historię ich dzieciństwa, rodziny, rówieśników, innych współistniejących u nich chorób. Analiza wskazuje punkty wspólne dla wszystkich przebadanych osób oraz aspekty, w których występowały pomiędzy nimi różnice. W dyskusji opisano zalety oraz ograniczenia przeprowadzonego badania i wykorzystanej do tego metody oraz zaproponowano dalsze kierunki rozwoju badań jakościowych na temat dermatillomanii.

This work aims to describe the subjective experience of dermatillomania (pathological skin picking PSP) by people suffering from it. It is a disorder of repetitive and compulsive picking of the skin, causing damage of the skin tissues. The introduction provides background information on the disease and an overview of qualitative research in the field. For the purposes of the study, 14 in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with people suffering from pathological skin picking, who applied for the study via an internet forum and were qualified based on the result obtained in the Polish version of the Skin Picking Scale-Revised (SPS-R) questionnaire. Then, an attempt was made to interpret and give meanings to the statements from the conversations, based on the method of Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The results section describes the thematically most important aspects of experiencing the disorder - the course of episodes of picking, their causes and consequences, ways of dealing with the disorder, experiencing one's appearance, loss caused by the disease and the benefits of it, as well as the life contexts of the respondents - their childhood history, family, peers, other comorbidities. The analysis indicates common points for all the examined people and aspects in which there were differences between them. The discussion describes the advantages and limitations of the conducted study and the method used for it and proposes further directions for the development of qualitative research on dermatillomania.
