Glorification of the Serial Killer Image in Netflix's production Dahmer - The Monster: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer and Its Impact on Popular Culture

Coraz częstszym problemem etycznym stają się produkcje fabularne poświęcone realnym zbrodniarzom i rzeczywistym zbrodniom, których się dopuścili. Twórcy tego typu seriali czy filmów, choć zawsze swoje działania usprawiedliwiają chęcią oddania należytej pamięci ofiarom i ich rodzinom, najczęściej lawirują na granicy tego, co warto i co należy pokazać ¬– i tego co choć niekoniecznie przyświeca ich szczytnemu celowi, będzie chętnie oglądane. Dobór aktorów, ścieżki dźwiękowej i medium strumieniowego pełni decydującą rolę w odbiorze takich produkcji i bardzo często większa uwaga jest poświęcona tym właśnie aspektom, a nie tłu danej historii, odczuciom rodzin ofiar czy ewentualnym konsekwencjom moralnym i społecznym wynikających z jej emisji. I to właśnie te czynniki mają ogromny wpływ, o ile nie decydujący, na późniejszą gloryfikację postaci przestępców i przyczyniają się do pamięci nie o ofiarach, lecz o winnych ich śmierci. Teza badawcza niniejszej pracy stanowi, że przypisywanie romantycznych cech postaciom seryjnych morderców, kreowanie ich na ludzi głównie zagubionych i niezrozumianych, a zwłaszcza pokazywanie ich w atrakcyjny sposób w produkcjach platform takich jak Netflix, skutkuje wzmożonym zafascynowaniem ich osobą w mediach społecznościowych, co kolei prowadzi między innymi do zaniedbania pamięci ofiar ich przestępstw, wykazania braku szacunku dla ich rodzin i przede wszystkim, do zachwiania decorum opowiadania o historiach tragicznych. Natomiast celem moich badań jest dowiedzenie się, w jaki sposób i czy w ogóle charakter produkcji masowego odbioru wpływa na opinię publiczną na poruszane w nim tematy i warunkuje odbiór przedstawianych w nim postaci.

More and more productions devoted to real criminals and the actual crimes they committed are becoming an ethical problem. The creators of such series or films, while always justifying their actions with the desire to give due remembrance to the victims and their families, are most often teetering on the line between what is worthwhile and what should be shown - and what, while not necessarily serving their noble purpose, will be willingly watched. The choice of actors, soundtrack and streaming medium plays a decisive role in the reception of such productions, and very often more attention is paid to these aspects, rather than to the background of the story, the feelings of the victims' families or the possible moral and social consequences resulting from its broadcast. And it is these factors that have a great influence, if not a decisive one, on the subsequent glorification of the characters of the criminals and contribute to the memory of not the victims, but the guilty of their deaths. The research thesis of this study is that assigning romantic qualities to the characters of serial killers, creating them as mainly lost and misunderstood people and, especially, showing them in attractive ways in the productions of platforms such as Netflix, results in increased fascination with their person in social media, which in turn leads, among other things, to neglecting the memory of the victims of their crimes, showing disrespect for their families and, above all, to shattering the decorum of telling tragic stories. The purpose of this research is to find out how, and if at all, the nature of mass production influences public opinion on the topics it covers and conditions the reception of the characters depicted in it.
