Insight into Postmodern Identity? A Netnographic Study of the MBTI Community

Narzędziu MBTI, służącemu do badania osobowości, poświęcono w pracach akademickich wiele miejsca, głównie w kontekście psychometrycznych właściwości kwestionariusza oraz jego zastosowań w zarządzaniu. Wyjątkowa popularność MBTI doprowadziła jednak do powstania internetowej społeczności skupionej wokół typologii osobowości. Niniejsza praca, wykorzystując metodę netnografii, po raz pierwszy w literaturze naukowej dokonuje jej charakterystyki, koncentrując się na zagadnieniu tożsamości. Analiza osadzona została w ramach licznych teorii opisujących współczesne społeczeństwo o ponowoczesnym charakterze, w szczególności w koncepcjach Zygmunta Baumana i Anthony’ego Giddensa. Dla wyraźnej separacji wymiaru jednostkowego i zbiorowego, przyjęto połączenie paradygmatu fenomenologii interpretatywnej oraz konstrukcjonizmu społecznego. Badanie pokazuje, że społeczność MBTI stanowi adekwatny podmiot analiz przemian ponowoczesnych. Wskazują na to liczne przykłady refleksyjnego i narracyjnego konstruowania tożsamości jednostkowej, kontrramowania naukowej krytyki oraz psychologizacji dyskursu. Praktyki takie jak poszukiwanie bliskości i walka z samotnością, a także wysoka wartość i akcentowanie autonomii oraz rozwoju osobistego, potwierdzają obecność charakterystycznych elementów ponowoczesności. Jednocześnie, wbrew tym samym teoriom, tożsamości zbiorowe nie zanikają, lecz zmieniają swą formę - ich fundamentem przestają być społeczne kody kulturowe, jak zakładają klasyczne teorie socjologiczne. Zastępują je jednostkowe narracje, z którymi można się utożsamić i odnieść do siebie samych.

The MBTI tool, designed to assess personality, has been extensively discussed in the academic literature, mainly with regard to the psychometric properties of the questionnaire and its applications in management. However, the exceptional popularity of MBTI has led to the emergence of an online community centered around personality typology. This thesis provides the first scholarly account of this community, with a focus on the issue of identity, employing the method of netnography. The analysis is grounded in a range of theories describing contemporary, postmodern society, in particular the concepts of Zygmunt Bauman and Anthony Giddens. To clearly separate the individual and collective dimensions, the study combines the paradigms of interpretative phenomenology and social constructionism. The findings demonstrate that the MBTI community constitutes a relevant subject for the analysis of postmodern transformations. This is evidenced by numerous examples of reflective and narrative construction of individual identity, counter-framing of scientific criticism, and the psychologization of discourse. Practices such as seeking closeness and coping with loneliness, along with the strong emphasis on autonomy and personal growth, confirm the presence of elements characteristic of postmodernity. At the same time, contrary to these very theoretical assumptions, collective identities do not disappear but rather transform their form: their foundation is no longer based on cultural codes, as posited by classical sociological theories, but individual narratives that others can identify with and relate to their own selves.
