Reading the Vistula River. The benchmark of nature writing in Wojciech Giełżyński’s reportages.

Tematem pracy jest sposób czytania Wisły w reportażach Wojciecha Giełżyńskiego według wzorca przyrodopisarskiego. Ma ona na celu przedstawienie estetyki fascynacji przyrodą z uwzględnieniem sposobu pisania o rzece. W kontekście języka, analizowana jest także metaforyka akwatyczna, co prowadzi do postawienia pytania o status rzeki Wisły i możliwości jej odczytania. Na tej podstawie ukazano doświadczenia przyrodnicze zawarte w literaturze. Ze względu na to, że interpretacja zależy od nastawienia czytelniczego, wymaga ona stworzenia przestrzeni na pograniczu nauk o przyrodzie i humanistyki. Przyrodopisarstwo posiadające swoją tradycję szczególnie w literaturze amerykańskiej, w Polsce stanowi od niedawna rodzącą się praktykę. Współcześnie stawia się pytanie o granice interwencji człowieka w środowisko, odwołując się do zagadnień ekokrytyki oraz wskazuje na kształtującą się na przestrzeni lat relację literatury i przyrody. Rozumienie i interesowanie się rzeczywistością reprezentowane przez przyrodopisarstwo charakteryzuje świadoma relacja autora (pisarza-przyrodnika) i natury, co wpływa na perspektywę pojmowania fenomenów przyrodniczych obecnych w literaturze.

The subject of the thesis is reading the Vistula River in Wojciech Giełżyński’s reportages according to the pattern of nature writing. This study is aimed at introducing the aesthetics the nature’s fancination and includes the way of writing about the river. In the context of the language, aquatic metaphores are analysed which leads to asking the question about the status of the Vistula River and ways of reading it. On this basis, the nature experiences included in the literature are shown. Due to the fact that interpretation depends on the reading attitude, it demands creating a room on the borderland of nature and humanities. Nature writing has its tradition especially in the american literature, yet in Poland it remains an emerging practice. Nowadays the question about the borders of human interference in the environment is asked, referring to the issues of ecocriticism and indicates the relations between literature and nature which was shaped over the years. Understanding and interest in the reality presented in nature writing characterizes concious relations of the author (naturalist) and space. It influences the perspective of forming the nature phenomena which present in the analysed literature.
