"The Bell Jar" as a Novel about Feminism and Mental Illness.

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest analizie powieści „Szklany klosz” amerykańskiej autorki Sylvii Plath – z perspektywy feminizmu oraz choroby psychicznej. Jej celem jest pokazanie, jak ważne wątki natury społecznej zostały ukryte w doświadczeniach bohaterki – Esther Greenwood. Praca pokazuje, w jaki sposób stygmatyzująca kobiety kultura lat 50. wpływała na ich pozycję i jak przekładała się na ich zdrowie psychiczne. Dodatkowo pozwala lepiej zrozumieć, jak osoba chora psychicznie postrzegała życie, które było dodatkowo uwarunkowane kontekstem społeczno-politycznym w Ameryce połowy XX wieku.

The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the novel ”The Bell Jar”, written by the American author – Sylvia Plath. The book has been explored from the perspective of feminism and mental illness. I intend to present how significant social topics were interwoven into the life experience of Esther Greenwood. My diploma work shows cultural factors in the 1950s America and the way they stigmatized women, affecting their social status and mental health. In addition, the thesis allows to get better understanding of how life looks like in the eyes of a sick person. It is worth remembering that the socio-political atmosphere that was prevailing in the USA in the middle of the 20th century also had an impact on Esther’s perception of the world.
