The 21st century postcolonial British literature provides a thorough insight into the acculturative strategies of adaptation of migrants and their offspring in the host country. Focusing on British authors of hybrid origin, this paper concentrates on various possibilities that stem from two or more cultures coming into contact. Acculturation processes can be divided into four approaches: assimilation, integration, separation, and marginalization. Each of those approaches has different psychological outcome on cultural identity and self-perception of a migrant. Drawing on three novels: White Teeth by Zadie Smith, The Icarus Girl by Helen Oyeyemi, and Soul Tourists by Bernardine Evaristo this paper aims at showing how much of an influence historical and family heritage have on the individual, how it may affect their psychological state, and presents their quest for identity. This thesis suggests that the influence that migration has on cultural and personal identity is inevitable and it leads to considerable psychological challenges and changes that occur as a result of a collision of two or more cultures.
