The text argues that libertarian or liberal theory needs to pay more attention to models based on evolutionary game theory, especially if we share naturalistic presuppositions. It demonstrates that scholars deriving political, normative consequences from evolutionary game-theoretical models can be classified into two groups: “whigs,” who propose a very cautious, much less ambitious version of democratic welfarism than Rawls, and the “strong reciprocity” advocates, who see in these models a confirmation of socialist ideas. Both approaches are taken somewhat arbitrarily, and a third, much more libertarian interpretation is also possible. Three types of resources that can be used by a libertarian theorist are described: those of diversity, mutuality and anti-centralisation.
