Depictions of Pregnancy in Nineteenth-Century Japanese Prints

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest przedstawieniom ciąży na drzeworytach japońskich z XIX wieku, a więc z przełomu epok Edo (1603–1868) oraz Meiji (1868–1912). Autorka omawia sztukę japońską na wspomniany temat z tego okresu oraz technikę drzeworytniczą, opisuje i analizuje wybrane dzieła sztuki oraz umieszcza je w kontekście społecznym, historycznym i kulturowym. Autorka stawia tezę, iż sztuka może służyć jako cenne źródło informacji o kulturze i społeczeństwie, a w okresach intensywnych przemian społecznych może być ważnym medium komentarza społecznego.

This thesis is devoted to depictions of pregnancy in nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock prints, at the turn of the Edo period (1603–1868) and the Meiji period (1868–1912). The author discusses Japanese art on this subject from that time and the woodblock printing technique, describes and analyzes selected works of art, and places them within their social, historical, and cultural context. The author argues that art can serve as a valuable source of information about culture and society, and that in times of intense social change it can be an important medium of social commentary.
