Tłumaczenia neologizmów w wybranych opowiadaniach Stanisława Lema

Niniejsza praca ma na celu analizę tłumaczeń neologizmów w wybranych opowiadaniach Stanisława Lema. Rozdział teoretyczny opisuje rozmaite definicje neologizmów, ich kategoryzacje, problemy, które mogą pojawić się podczas próby przetłumaczenia na język angielski, jak również możliwe metody tłumaczeń. W analogiczny sposób zostały opisane nazwy własne, które również bardzo często są neologizmami w utworach Lema. Dodatkowo, praca opisuje i stara się scharakteryzować unikatowy styl Polskiego pisarza, który cechuje się połączeniem elementów literatury naukowej i science-fiction oraz tej przeznaczonej dla dziecięcych czytelników W rozdziale analitycznym wybrane zostały neologizmy z trzech opowiadań Stanisława Lema, które pochodzą z książki Bajki Robotów oraz Cyberiada. W celu przeprowadzenia analizy neologizmy, zarówno te pochodzące z oryginalnej wersji Polskiej, jak również ich angielskie odpowiedniki, zostały pogrupowane i zebrane w tabelach. Porównanie dotyczy neologizmów Stanisława Lema oraz jedynej dostępnej wersji tłumaczenia autorstwa amerykańskiego tłumacza, Michaela Kandela. Badania koncentrują się na takich aspektach jak słowotwórstwo, etymologia, konotacje, jak również możliwe cele i inspiracje autora oraz tłumacza. Dodatkowo, praca zawiera opis wybranych technik tłumaczenia oraz ocenę trafności angielskojęzycznych odpowiedników. Głównym przedmiotem badań jest analiza podobieństw i różnic pomiędzy neologizmami w wersji oryginalnej oraz przetłumaczonej, a także konsekwencje wyborów tłumacza. Końcowym elementem jest procentowe wyliczenie wybranych technik tłumaczeń oraz krótki komentarz zebranych wyników.

The thesis examines and analyses the translation of neologisms in Stanisław Lem’s selected short stories. The theoretical chapter describes the concept of neologisms, its categorisation, some challenges which may occur while trying to find target-text equivalents, as well as some possible methods of translation. In the analogical way there are characterised proper names, which very often are also neologisms in the case of Lem’s writing. Additionally, the paper explores some qualities of Lem’s unique style and writing which is a combination of science-fiction and children’s literature. In the analytical chapter the neologisms are chosen from the three short stories from The Mortal Engines and The Cyberiad. They are listed in the tables both in the original and translated version. As there is only one available translation by Michael Kandel, the comparison is made between the source-text and the target-text neologisms. The research concentrates on such features as word-formation, etymology, connotations, as well as the author’s or the translator’s possible aim and inspirations. Moreover, there are the analyses of the translational techniques and of the accuracy of the target-text equivalents. The main focus is on the similarities and differences between the original and translated neologisms and the consequences of the translator’s decisions. The final part is the percentage calculation of the chosen methods of translation supported with a short commentary of the results.
