Strong or weak as a lion? – a comparative analysis of European and Arabic beast tales

Praca poświęcona jest analizie porównawczej bajek zwierzęcych dwóch kręgów kulturowych – europejskiego i arabskiego. Przedmiotem analizy są wybrane powiastki Ignacego Krasickiego i Jean de La Fontaine’a oraz niektóre bajki zwierzęce pochodzące z arabskich zbiorów "Kalīla wa Dimna" oraz "Księgi tysiąca i jednej nocy". Punktem wyjścia do analizy jest charakterystyka, a także teoria bajki zwierzęcej według rosyjskiego literaturoznawcy, Władimira Proppa. Następnie przybliżony zostanie kontekst kulturowy oraz ogólna specyfika twórczości europejskich przedstawicieli i geneza utworów wschodnich, które w pewnym stopniu nakreślą różnice wynikające z okoliczności i celu powstawania bajek zwierzęcych. Ostatnia część zawiera analizę bajek na podstawie wybranych przypowieści, by wreszcie w komparatystyczny sposób ująć podobieństwa i różnice bajki zwierzęcej kręgu wschodniego i zachodniego wynikające z budowy utworów, świata przedstawionego oraz przesłania.

The thesis is devoted to a comparative analysis of beast fables (or animal tales) of two cultural circles - European and Arabic. The subject of the analysis are selected tales by Ignacy Krasicki and Jean de La Fontaine as well as some beast fables from the Arabic collections "Kalīla wa Dimna" and "One Thousand and One Nights". The starting point for the analysis is the characterization and the theory of the animal fables according to the Russian literary scholar Vladimir Propp. Afterwards the cultural context and the general specificity of the work of European representatives and the genesis of Eastern works will be introduced, which to some extent will outline the differences resulting from the circumstances and purpose of creating beast fables. The final part contains an analysis of tales based on selected ones, which is made in a comparative way in order to capture the similarities and differences of the beast fables in the eastern and western circles resulting from the structure of the tales, the represented world and the message.
