Temperatury krytyczne Drosophila melanogaster: plastycznośc fenotypowa i ewolucja

Organisms live in a constantly changing environment, which is why many of them have evolved adaptations that allow them to preserve homeostasis. The temperature of the environment is particularly dependent on cold-blooded animals, because many aspects of their physiology are subject to change with the temperature changes. In addition, many ectothermal animals show some specific thermal preferences, which can change even with some physiological process. Because the temperatures preferred by animals and their selection of microhabitats may influence indirectly and directly their fitness, in this work I decided to check whether thermal preferences are subject to evolution, and whether this feature can be plasticized by the development temperature. The research was carried out on males of the Drosophila melanogaster fruit fly because it is a well-known model in thermal biology, has specific thermal preferences and is a representative of cold-blooded animals. To test whether thermal preferences are evolving and whether this feature can be plastic, I used a group in which insects were exposed to temperatures over time for many generations, reflecting the evolution and exposed of other temperatures during development for two generations in order to check phenotypic plasticity of this feature. Then a thermal preference test was carried out, during which the flies were able to move freely and select the temperature. The results have shown that the temperature at which the flies evolved has a significant impact on their thermal preferences, and the temperature of development does not affect this feature.pl
