Tatra mountains, safety in the mountains, mountains, mountains trails, tourism infrastructure
Są to szlaki: (1) Kuźnice (dolna stacja kolei linowej) – Hala Gąsienicowa – Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy; (2) Schronisko PTTK Murowaniec – Kasprowy Wierch – Kuźnice (dolna stacja kolei linowej);(3) Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza – Schronisko Górskie PTTK w Dolinie Pięciu Stawów Polskich.
The purpose of the paper is a detailed analysis of selected hiking trails in the Polish part of the Tatra Mountains and, according to the obtained data, assessment of these routes in therms of maintaining the appropriate safety of tourist traffic. The paper also indicates a number of solutions that could help with informing hiker about the technical and natural conditions prevailing on these trails, as well as the potential dangers that may be encountered during the trips.Three selected hiking trails have been described in detail. The trails pass the Reglowe, Western and High Tatras. The trails are: (1) Kuźnice (The Lower Cable Car Station) – Hala Gąsienicowa – Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy; (2) Schronisko PTTK Murowaniec – Kasprowy Wierch – Kuźnice (The Lower Cable Car Station); (3) Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza – Schronisko Górskie PTTK w Dolinie Pięciu Stawów Polskich. The first part of the paper presents the characteristics of the Tatra Mountains, including the genesis and location of the mountain range, the division of the Tatra Mountains in therms of physio-geographical, hydrographical and administrative features. The geological structure and terrain features were discussed, as well as the climate of the Tatras, hydrographical conditions and the flora and fauna of the region. In this chapter also the human activity has been described – from the forms of environmental protection, through environmental threats (both natural and antropogenic) and industrial activity to the forms of tourism in the area (historical overview, types of activity, tourist infrastructure, profile of the Tatra tourists and the previous accidents). The next part contains the characteristics and analysis of all three selected routes. Each of them has been divided into stages for more detailes research (3 to 4 stages depending on the trail). The analysis is based on field studies conducted in the Tatras maliny from June to December 2018 and February 2019, as well as on digital and cartographic materials. The field research is primarily based on collecting data using a self-made form with distinguished three conventional groups of criteria: geographical/landscape, technical and tourist. Also in this part two examples of foreign trails are discussed – the hiking trail from Thira to Oia on Santorini Island, Greece and the hiking trail leading along the cliff coast of Mesecev Zaliv in Slovenia. The comprehensive analysis and obtained detail informations allowed to specify the level of safety of the selected paths and their technical conditions. Also the potencial dangers which can be encountered during hiking and neglected fragments posing a risk to hikers have been defined. Analyzing the trail substrates and atmospheric features (including sudden atmospheric events taking place in the recent time, especially rainstorms, heavy snowfall and ground icing) the author was able to point the degree of potencial risk. The research allowed for an attempt of solving the problems that affect both visitors of the Tatra Mountains National Park and the Park management also the emergency services that are called to rescue due to unfortunate accidents on the trails. The solutions proposed in the paper could not only support the management of mass tourism and safe journeys in the Tatras but could also help to protect the natural environment, particularly exposed to human pressure along the trails. The proposed methods of adequate informing about the conditions on the trails and tips that could be provided to the visitors entering the trails would improve the safe usage of the area within the Tatra National Park and reduce the costs of rescue operations directed more and more often to inadequately prepared and not fully aware tourists who want to confront with the high mountain environment of the Tatra Mountains.
