COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE POLISH AND BRAZILIAN TRANSLATION OF SHREK 1 AND SHREK 2

Film Shrek jest znany na całym świecie. Osiągnął światowy sukces, podbijając serca najmłodszych widzów i nie tylko. Zasadniczo wszyscy znają przygody Zielonego Ogra i jego przyjaciół. Niniejsza praca magisterska ma na celu przeprowadzenie analizy porównawczej filmów Shrek 1 i Shrek 2 w polskim i brazylijskim przekładzie Bartosza Wierzbięty i Pavlosa Euthymiou. Praca składa się z części teoretycznej i praktycznej. W pierwszej części przedstawiamy ogólne informacje o filmie, w tym jego krótkie streszczenie, odbiór na całym świecie oraz biografię Williama Steiga - twórcy Shreka. W tej części przedstawiliśmy również podstawowe koncepcje tłumaczenia audiowizualnego (TAW) oraz podstawowe informacje na temat jego trzech głównych rodzajów: napisów, dubbingu i wersji lektorskiej. Ponadto zaprezentowaliśmy główne cechy dubbingu w Brazylii i Polsce, w tym jego historię w tych dwóch krajach. Następnie, zostały wprowadzone narzędzia badawcze w postaci koncepcji strategii Schleiermachera i Venutiego oraz, w szerszej perspektywie, Prof. Jerzego Brzozowskiego, razem z teorią skoposu oraz bermanowskimi tendencjami deformacyjnymi. Następnie przedstawiliśmy elementy kulturowe obecne w filmach animowanych omówione przez badaczkę Iwonę Sikorę. W części praktycznej przedstawiliśmy sylwetki obu tłumaczy - Bartosza Wierzbięty i Pavlosa Euthymiou, w tym ich biografie i dorobek. Następnie porównaliśmy tłumaczenia wybranych fragmentów Shreka 1 i Shreka 2 w portugalskim brazylijskim i polskim. W analizie skomentowaliśmy strategie i techniki przyjęte przez tłumaczy, zwracając szczególną uwagę na strategię naturalizacji i to, czy tłumacze są konsekwentni w jej użyciu. Ponadto wyznaczyliśmy elementy kulturowe, które pojawiają się w dubbingu brazylijskim i polskim.

The film Shrek is known worldwide. It has achieved worldwide success, winning the hearts of young and old viewers. Basically, everyone knows the adventures of the Green Ogre and his friends. This master's thesis aims to carry out a comparative analysis of the films Shrek 1 and Shrek 2 in the Polish and Brazilian Portuguese translations by Bartosz Wierzbięta and Pavlos Euthymiou.The work consists of a theoretical part and a practical part. In the first part, we introduce some general information about the film, including its brief summary, its reception around the world and the biography of William Steig - creator of Shrek. In this part we also introduce the fundamental concepts of audiovisual translation (AVT) and provide some basic information on the three main types of translation: subtitling, dubbing and voice-over. In addition, we presented the main characteristics of dubbing in Brazil and Poland, including its history in these two countries. This was followed by a presentation of research tools in the form of Schleiermacher and Venuti's concept of strategies and, from a broader perspective, of Prof Jerzy Brzozowski, together with theory of skopos and Bermanian deformative tendencies. Then, we commented on the cultural elements present in the animated films discussed by Iwona Sikora. In the practical section, we presented the figures of both translators - Bartosz Wierzbięta and Pavlos Euthymiou, including their biographies and their works. Then, we compared the translations of selected passages from the films Shrek 1 and Shrek 2 in Brazilian Portuguese and Polish. In the analysis, we commented on the strategies and techniques adopted by the translators, paying particular attention to the strategy of naturalisation and whether the interpreters make consistent use of it. In addition, we determine the cultural elements that appear in the Brazilian and Polish dubbing.

O filme Shrek é conhecido mundialmente. Alcançou o sucesso no mundo inteiro, conquistando os corações dos espectadores mais novos e além. Basicamente, todo mundo conhece as aventuras do Ogro Verde e seus amigos. Na presente tese de mestrado visamos efetuar uma análise comparativa do filme Shrek 1 e Shrek 2 nas traduções para o polonês e para o português no padrão brasileiro, por Bartosz Wierzbięta e Pavlos Euthymiou. O trabalho consiste na parte teórica e na parte prática. Na primeira, introduzimos algumas informações gerais sobre o filme, incluindo o seu breve resumo, a sua recepção no mundo e biografia de William Steig – criador de Shrek. Nesta parte também apresentamos os conceitos fundamentais da tradução audiovisual e fornecemos algumas informações básicas sobre os três principais tipos dela: legendagem, dublagem e voice-over. Além disso, apresentamos as principais características da dublagem no Brasil e na Polônia, incluindo a sua história nestes dois países. Em seguida, seguidamente, foram apresentadas as ferramentas de pesquisa na forma do conceito das estratégias de Schleiermacher e Venuti e, numa perspetiva mais ampla, do Prof. Jerzy Brzozowski, junto com a teoria de skopos as tendências deformadoras bermanianas. Em seguida, comentamos os elementos culturais presentes nos filmes de animação abordados por Iwona Sikora. Na parte prática, apresentamos as figuras de ambos os tradutores – Bartosz Wierzbięta e Pavlos Euthymiou, incluindo a sua biografia e seus trabalhos. Posteriormente, comparamos as traduções dos trechos selecionados provindos do filme Shrek 1 e Shrek 2 em português do Brasil e em polonês. Na análise, comentamos as estratégias e técnicas adotadas pelos tradutores, prestando atenção especial à estratégia de naturalização e se os intérpretes recorrem a ela de forma consistente. Além disso, determinamos os elementos culturais que aparecem na dublagem brasileira e na dublagem polonesa.
