The reaction of the American press to Poland regaining independence during the first months of the Polish state's existence

W 1918 roku Polska odzyskała niepodległość po ponad wieku zaborów. Rozpoczął się intensywny okres odbudowy i umocnienia państwa polskiego na arenie międzynarodowej. Powstanie nowego państwa, które musiało rozwiązać liczne problemy wewnętrzne i walczyło z innymi narodami o swoje granice, wywołało poruszenie w Europie i w Ameryce. Praca porusza temat porzucenia przez Stany Zjednoczone dotychczasowej polityki zagranicznej i ich zaangażowanie w sytuację europejską. W związku z sytuacją Polski są poruszone jedynie wybrane zagadnienia, zarówno z polityki wewnętrznej, jak i zagranicznej. Zarysowano sytuację podczas tworzenia rządu polskiego, aż do porozumienia pomiędzy Komitetem Narodowym Polskim a generałem Piłsudskim. Natomiast z polityki zagranicznej został poruszony temat konferencji wersalskiej oraz problem bolszewizmu. Ponadto zostały opisane konflikty graniczne z Ukraińcami. Głównym celem pracy jest pokazanie poziomu zainteresowanie sytuacją Polski w prasie amerykańskiej – co dokładnie pisano i w jaki sposób się wyrażani o odrodzonym państwie.

In 1918, Poland regained independence after more than a century of partitions. An intense period of rebuilding and strengthening the Polish state on the international stage began. The emergence of a new state, which had to solve numerous internal problems and fought with other nations over its borders, caused a stir in Europe and Americe. The work put forward abandoning previous foreign policy by United States and their involvement in the European situation. Concerning Poland's situation, only selected issues from both internal and foreign polisy are raised. The situation during the formation of the Polish government, up to the agreement between the Polish National Committee and General Piłsudski, is outlined. In terms of foreign policy, the topis of the Versailles Conference and the problem of Bolshevism are discussed. Additionally, border conflicts with the Ukrainians are described. The main aim of the work is to show the level of interest in Poland's situation in the American press - what exactly was written and how the reborn state was portrayed.
