Wizje Ameryki: Pisarz jako Profeta w "Skowycie" Allena Ginsberga, "Nagim Lunchu" Williama S. Burroughsa oraz "Wizjach Cody'ego" Jacka Kerouaca

Niniejsza praca ma na celu ukazanie wizjonerskich cech w trzech wybranych dziełach pisarzy Beat Generation: „Skowycie” Allena Ginsberga, „Nagim Lunchu” Williama S. Burroughsa oraz „Wizjach Cody’ego” Jacka Kerouaca, zakładając, że wizje Ameryki w ich literaturze są jednocześnie spełnieniem ich proroczych pobudek. Profetyzm lub proroctwo są rozpatrywane tu jako literackie przełożenie ich iluminacji, epifanii czy objawień dotyczących kraju, które ustanawia owych pisarzy jako apologetów ich prywatnych przekonań i orędowników własnych pomysłów na ocalenie amerykańskiej duszy. Ramy konceptualne proroczej świadomości Ginsberga, Burroughsa i Kerouaca ujęte są jako miłosierdzie, zagłada i hołd, ponieważ właśnie te pojęcia są ukazywane jako kwintesencja ich wizjonerskiej linii programowej. Osiągnięcie czy wywołanie wizjonerskiego stanu analizowane jest w kontekście określonych proroczych tradycji, technik literackich, czy osobistych skłonności. Ich tendencja do mistycyzmu i proroctwa zostaje wreszcie zweryfikowana jako zestaw konstruktywnych sugestii czy natchnionych alternatyw dla społeczeństwa amerykańskiego.Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Rozdział pierwszy opisuje pozycję Allena Ginsberga jako poety-wieszcza w „Skowycie”; tradycja proroków biblijnych oraz bardyczny ton Walta Whitmana są pokazane jako inspiracja dla wizjonerskich i strukturalnych cech wiersza, ostatecznie uznając krzewienie miłosierdzia i powszechnego współczucia w Ameryce za profetyczny cel Ginsberga. Rozdział drugi bada proroctwo zagłady w „Nagim Lunchu” Williama S. Burroughsa w kontekście pisarza jako instrumentu rejestrującego przekaz mrocznych wizji nieuchwytnego zła, apokalipsy, zagrożeń dla amerykańskiej tożsamości i ludzkiej autonomii, przy czym prawda oraz oswobodzenie umysłu zniewolonego językiem i technologią są przedstawiane jako potencjalnie zbawcze. Rozdział trzeci stanowi analizę „Wizji Cody’ego” Jacka Kerouaca jako apostolskiej misji zdania proroczej relacji z tytułowych wizji Cody’ego, whitmanowskiego archetypu Amerykanina; cechy wieszcze są ukazane w natchnionym orędownictwie samego upamiętniania, oddawania hołdu amerykańskości i celebracji pamięci jako drogi do odkupienia czy nieśmiertelności. Pewne wspólne cechy pośród proroczych metod, technik i stanowisk w powyższych dziełach omówione są w zakończeniu, podkreślając literacką i historyczną wartość ich profetyzmu.

The present thesis aims to demonstrate the visionary qualities in three selected works of Beat Generation writers: Allen Ginsberg's "Howl", William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch and Jack Kerouac's Visions of Cody, while maintaining that their visions of America are realizations of their prophetic urges. Prophecy in the context of these writers will be considered as a rendering of their illuminations, epiphanies and revelations on the country, establishing them as convinced advocates of their private notions of redeeming the American soul. The conceptual framework behind the insightful awareness of Ginsberg, Burroughs and Kerouac will be determined as mercy, doom and remembrance, respectively, since these particular ideas will be ascertained as central to the their visionary vocation and quintessential to their agenda. The attainment and induction of these visions will be discussed in the context of certain prophetic traditions, literary techniques or personal inclinations. Ultimately, their mystical and oracular impulses will be verified as beneficial suggestions or inspired alternatives for the American people.The thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter is concerned with Allen Ginsberg's position of a poet-prophet in "Howl"; the visionary and structural qualities of the poem are deemed to be rooted in the tradition of Hebrew prophets and Walt Whitman's bardic voice, while ultimately determining Ginsberg's vatic urge to promote mercy and universal compassion in America. The second chapter examines William S. Burroughs' stance as a prophet of doom in Naked Lunch, through his desire to be a transparent instrument broadcasting his sinister visions of elusive malevolence in the doomsday panorama, as well as the envisaged threats to the American identity and autonomy; truth and freedom from the menacing technological and linguistic conditioning of the mind are finally viewed as potential deliverance. The third chapter constitutes an analysis of Jack Kerouac's Visions of Cody as a God-appointed apostolic mission to commemorate and provide a metaphysical and visionary account of his revelations of Cody, the Whitmanic archetype of the American Man, eventually locating the prophetic in Kerouac's inspired act of encouraging the very remembrance of the core of Americanness and preaching the celebration of memory as paths to redemption and immortality. In the conclusion, the common prophetic techniques and standpoints among the writers are juxtaposed briefly, further supporting the literary and historical significance of their visionary impulses.
