Celem niniejszej pracy jest opis i analiza poszukiwania tożsamości przez głównego bohatera i narratora Obietnicy poranka, powieści autobiograficznej Romaina Gary’ego opublikowanej w 1960 r. Praca skupia się na przedstawionych w powieści tożsamościach narodowych i literackim powołaniu bohatera. Rozdział pierwszy składa się z krótkiej analizy cech gatunku autobiograficznego zdefiniowanych przez Philippe’a Lejeune’a i ich obecności w Obietnicy poranka. Drugi rozdział jest poświęcony matce bohatera i jej roli w kształtowaniu tożsamości jej syna. W trzecim rozdziale porównuję liczne tożsamości narodowe Gary’ego: rosyjską, polską, żydowską i francuską, by określić jego stosunek wobec nich. Rozdział czwarty skupia się na poszukiwaniu powołania przez bohatera i jego próbach w różnych dziedzinach artystycznych. Praca kończy się badaniem nad ścieżką literacką narratora i próbą określenia celu jego pisarstwa.

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to describe and analyse quest for identity led by the protagonist-narrator in Promise at Dawn, an autobiographical novel by Romain Gary published in 1960. The analysis focuses on his national identities and literary vocation as presented in the novel. The first chapter examines the characteristics of the autobiographical genre as defined by Philippe Lejeune, in order to identify their presence in Promise at Dawn. The second chapter focuses on the role of the protagonist’s mother in shaping her son’s identity. In the third chapter, I compare Gary’s multiple national identities – Russian, Polish, Jewish and French – in order to define his attitude towards them. The fourth chapter concentrates on the protagonist's search for his vocation and his attempts in several artistic fields. The analysis concludes with a study of the narrator’s literary path and the purpose of his writing.

L’objectif de ce mémoire de licence est la description et l’analyse de la quête identitaire menée par le protagoniste-narrateur de La Promesse de l’aube, un roman autobiographique de Romain Gary publié en 1960. L’analyse se concentre sur les identités nationales et sur la vocation littéraire du protagoniste présentées dans le roman. Le premier chapitre part des caractéristiques du genre autobiographique telles que définies par Philippe Lejeune, pour relever leur présence dans La Promesse de l’aube. Le deuxième chapitre est consacré à la figure de la mère du protagoniste et à son rôle dans la formation de l’identité de celui-ci. Dans le troisième chapitre je compare les multiples identités nationales de Gary – russe, polonaise, juive et française – pour dégager son attitude envers celles-ci. Le quatrième chapitre se concentre sur la recherche de la vocation de protagoniste et sur ses tentatives dans plusieurs domaines artistiques. L’analyse se termine par l’étude de la voie littéraire du narrateur et de l’objectif de son écriture.
