Motywy światła i ciemności w utworze "Nowy Wspaniały Świat"

Celem niniejszej pracy dyplomowej jest analiza motywów światła i ciemności zastosowanych w utworze Aldousa Huxleya zatytułowanym Nowy Wspaniały Świat. Od wieków motywy te odgrywają znaczącą rolę w literaturze, ponieważ mogą one silnie wpływać na ludzką wyobraźnię. Aldous Huxley jest jednym z autorów, którzy wykorzystali je jako narzędzie w swojej pracy i dlatego udało mu się z powodzeniem zawrzeć w swojej pracy ostrzeżenie o możliwej rzeczywistości, w której wszystko jest kontrolowane przez system. Na początku, pracy omówiony jest związek między osobistymi doświadczeniami niewidomego autora a użyciem światła i ciemności w powieści. Następnie podejmowane są próby określenia, czy motywy użyte przy opisie Nowego Świata mają pozytywne czy negatywne konotacje i jaki efekt osiąga autor dostosowując je do swojej koncepcji powieści. Po drugie, w tym samym celu, motywy zostały zbadane w odniesieniu do Rezerwatu. Następnie zostały one poddane analizie w odniesieniu do głównego bohatera, Johna, jedynej osoby, która doświadczyła życia w obu miejscach. Analiza została przeprowadzona w celu pokazania, w jaki sposób wykorzystano motywy światła i ciemności w celu przedstawienia pozytywnych lub negatywnych stron Rezerwatu i Nowego Świata oraz wpływu, jaki ma życie w obu miejscach na wrażliwą jednostkę. Na koniec, praca ta analizuje podejście Aldousa Huxleya do omawianych koncepcji i jego odejście od powszechnie akceptowanego wykorzystania podanych motywów.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the motifs of light and darkness used in Brave New World, a novel written by Aldous Huxley. For centuries those motifs have been playing a significant role in literature as they can strongly influence human imagination. Aldous Huxley is one of the authors who used them as a tool in his work and therefore was successful to convey a warning of a possible reality where everything would be controlled by the system. First, the thesis discusses the relationship between his personal experiences of blindness and the use of light and darkness in the novel. Next, attempts are made to determine whether the motifs used while describing the World State have positive or negative connotations and what effect the author achieved by adapting them to his idea of the novel. Secondly, with the same purpose, the motifs were investigated with regard to The Reservation. Next, they were evaluated with respect to the main character, John the Savage, the only individual who experienced life in both places. The analysis was conducted to show how the motifs of light and darkness were used in order to present the positive or negative sides of the Reservation and the World State and the effect living there has on a sensitive individual. Finally, the thesis analyzes Aldous Huxley’s approach towards the concepts and his departure from commonly accepted use of the motifs.
