Spirituality, seduction and redemption in the movie "Holy Smoke" (by Jane Campion 1999)

Ta praca opisuje zjawiska uwiedzenia, deprogrammingu oraz związków między ludzką seksualnością i duchowością. Rozważania na owe tematy prowadzę w oparciu o powstały w 1999 r. film reż. Jane Campion pt. “Holy Smoke”. Przedstawiona tam relacja pary głównych bohaterów: Ruth Barron i P. J. Watersa jest wielowymiarowa, daje pole do dyskusji na temat ludzkich pragnień i lęków. W rozdziale pierwszym przybliżam perspektywę historyczną oraz sytuację prawną dotyczącą religii w Australii (miejsce akcji filmu, stamtąd również pochodzi Ruth i jej rodzina), aby lepiej zrozumieć zachowanie rodziny Barronów wobec niecodziennych wyborów religijnych ich córki, która w wyniku ich działań zostaje poddana deprogrammingowi. Następnie przedstawiam czym jest deprogramming, dlaczego moralność stosowania tej metody stanowi przedmiot dyskusji, przyglądam się także jak zagadnienie to zostało przedstawione w filmie. Kolejny rozdział porusza temat uwiedzenia. Skupiam się w nim głównie na seksualnym uwiedzeniu oraz tzw. “niesmacznym uwiedzeniu”, w oparciu przede wszystkim o prace Erica Cavea oraz Adriena Bartona. Ponownie omawiam jak zjawisko zostało przedstawione w filmie. Na koniec poruszam kwestie symboliki przedstawionej w pracy Jane Campion i to jak reżyserka łączy sfery seksualności i duchowego życia postaci. Posiłkuję się Jungowską koncepcją libido. Staram się dowieść, iż problem z jego wykorzystaniem przez bohaterów stanowi oś przedstawionych w “Holy Smoke” wydarzeń.

This work describes the phenomena of seduction, deprogramming and the relationship between human sexuality and spirituality. I reflect on these themes based on the 1999 film by director Jane Campion entitled "Holy Smoke". I am reflecting on these issues on the basis of Jane Campion's 1999 film "Holy Smoke". The relationship of the pair of main characters depicted there: Ruth Barron and P. J. Waters is multifaceted and gives room for discussion of human desires and fears. In the first chapter, I introduce the historical perspective and the legal situation regarding religion in Australia (the film's setting, which is also where Ruth and her family come from) in order to better understand the Barron family's behaviour towards the unusual religious choices of their daughter, who is subjected to deprogramming as a result of their actions. I then outline what deprogramming is, why the morality of using this method is up for debate, and look at how the issue is portrayed in the film. The next chapter deals with the topic of seduction. I focus mainly on sexual seduction and so-called 'unsavoury seduction', based primarily on the work of Eric Cave and Adrien Barton. Again, I discuss how the phenomenon is portrayed in film. Finally, I touch on the symbolism depicted in Jane Campion's work and how the director connects the spheres of sexuality and the spiritual life of the characters. I use the Jungian concept of libido. I try to prove that the problem of its use by the characters is the axis of the events depicted in 'Holy Smoke'.
