Szanghaj w latach 1932-1945 jest historią miasta, które w tym okresie musiało się zmagać z atakiem japońskim zarówno w 1932 roku podczas tzw. incydentu szanghajskiego, jak i w 1937 roku, w ramach pełnoskalowej drugiej wojny chińsko-japońskiej. Będą omówione starania władz miejskich, jak i Państwa Środka, które dążyły do reform, stabilizujących sytuację w mieście. Zostanie poruszony wątek Dzielnicy Międzynarodowej, jej władz, struktur czy rozwoju infrastruktury i ludności aż do wybuchu wojny w 1937. Również jej znaczenie dla miasta oraz kwestii relacji Dzielnica-Chiny na bazie polityki i gospodarki. Będzie mowa o wojnie w kontekście przyczyn nieudanej obrony chińskiej w Szanghaju. Zostanie opisana nie tylko sama bitwa, która przez ówczesnych została określona jako Verdun wschodu. Pokazane zostaną okoliczności jej towarzyszące, udowodniające tezę o słabszej pozycji Chińskiej pod względem gospodarczym i wojskowym nad Japonią. Po bitwie w latach 1937-1941 zostaną przedstawione okoliczności funkcjonowania miasta podzielonego między część okupowaną przez Japonię, jak i tą, będącą dalej pod kontrolą mocarstw zachodnich. Będzie mowa o polityce Dzielnicy do 1941 roku w zakresie polityki wewnętrznej, jak i prób dyplomacji z władzami japońskimi i podległymi im Chińczykami. Potem zostanie omówiona sytuacja po wejściu Wielkiej Brytanii i Stanów Zjednoczonych do wojny i zajęciu Dzielnicy przez wojska japońskie. Będzie omówiona polityka stopniowego dokręcania śruby mieszkańcom dzielnicy przy stale pogarszającej się gospodarce miasta w zakresie np. żywności. Omawianie pracy zostanie zakończone wraz z wkroczeniem do miasta wojsk chińskich we wrześniu 1945 roku.

Shanghai in 1932-1945 is the history of the city, which at that time had to cope with the Japanese attack both in 1932 during the so-called the Shanghai Incident and in 1937, as part of the full-scale Second Sino-Japanese War. The efforts of the city authorities and the Middle Kingdom, which sought reforms to stabilize the situation in the city, will be discussed. The topic of the International District, its authorities, structures and the development of infrastructure and population until the outbreak of war in 1937 will be discussed. Also its importance for the city and the issue of relations between the District and China based on politics and economy. The war will be discussed in the context of the reasons for the unsuccessful Chinese defense in Shanghai. Not only the battle itself will be described, which was described by the contemporary people as the Verdun of the East. The accompanying circumstances will be shown, proving the thesis that China is in a weaker economic and military position over Japan. After the battle in 1937-1941, the circumstances of the functioning of the city divided between the part occupied by Japan and the part still under the control of Western powers will be presented. There will be talk about the District's policy until 1941 in terms of internal policy, as well as attempts at diplomacy with the Japanese authorities and the Chinese subordinated to them. Then the situation after Great Britain and the United States entered the war and the occupation of the District by Japanese troops will be discussed. The policy of gradually tightening the screws on the district's residents will be discussed, given the constantly deteriorating economy of the city in terms of, for example, food. Discussion of the work will be completed when Chinese troops enter the city in September 1945.
