Lost narrative : analysis of Emma J. Austen's translation by J. Dmochowska

Celem artykułu jest analiza polskiego przekładu Emmy Jane Austen autorstwa Jadwigi Dmochowskiej z uwzględnieniem tendencji zniekształcających przekład wyodrębnionych przez Antoine’a Bermana. Interpretacja powieści okazuje się konieczna do wydobycia jej dominanty semantycznej, a następnie ustalenia, które zabiegi deformacyjne najbardziej w tę dominantę godzą. Ponieważ dominantą Emmy okazuje się być narracja, naj bardziej rażącym błędem translatorskim staje się zacieranie superpozycji języków, który to błąd nie pozwala czytelnikowi polskiego przekładu śledzić relacji językowych, w jakich pozostają do siebie bohaterowie powieści. Wpływa to także na odbiór warstwy znaczeniowej dzieła. W artykule analizowane są również inne tendencje deformacyjne, takie jak uszlachetnianie wypowiedzi bohaterów, niszczenie rytmu czy racjonalizacja. Dogłębna analiza przekładu pozwala stwierdzić, iż przekład nie oddaje wielu zalet oryginału, zbliżając polską wersję Emmy raczej do stereotypu powieści sentymentalnej niż do pełnej humoru i nowatorskich technik narracyjnych powieści Austen.

The article is an analysis of Jane Austen’s “Emma” Polish translation, by Jadwiga Dmochowska. The analysis uses deformation practices, described by Antoine Berman, as methodological tools. The interpretation of the novel is necessary to find its semantic dominant and to show the deformation practices which destroy this dominant the most. The semantic dominant of “Emma” is the narration, therefore the effacement of superimposition of language appears to be the biggest translator’s mistake. It disables Polish readers to see linguistic relationships between the characters, which affects the meaning of the novel as well. Translation uses also other deformation tendencies, such as ennoblement, destruction of rhythms and rationalization. Detailed analysis of them enables to claim that the translation does not recreate many qualities of the original. Polish version of “Emma” seems to be similar to stereotypical sentimental novel rather than to the witty and full of new narrative techniques Austen’s work.
