Access to Education as a Determinant of Fate Based on Selected Stories by Sabahattin Ali

Praca licencjacka poświęcona jest analizie wybranych opowiadań Sabahattina Alego, tureckiego pisarza tworzącego w pierwszej połowie XX w., w kontekście braku dostępu do edukacji jako determinanty losów mieszkańców wsi. Do analizy wybrano opowiadania: Asfaltowa droga, Metryka, Wózki po pięć kuruszy, Pies oraz Dom naprzeciw budowy, ze zbioru Wrogowie: opowiadania anatolijskie (wyd. polskie 1953). W pracy szerzej przedstawiono tło historyczne, uwzględniono działania tureckich władz w celu poprawy dostępu do edukacji na obszarach wiejskich (rolę instytutów wiejskich ‒ Köy Enstitütleri), przedstawiono zarys życia i twórczości Sabahattina Alego.

The bachelor’s thesis is dedicated to the analysis of selected short stories by Sabahattin Ali, a Turkish writer active in the first half of the 20th century, in the context of the lack of access to education as a determining factor in the fate of rural inhabitants. The analysis focuses on the following stories: The Asphalt Road, Birth Certificate, Carts for Five Kurush, The Dog, and The House Opposite the Construction Site, from the collection Enemies: Anatolian Stories (Polish edition, 1953). The thesis provides a broader historical background, including the efforts of the Turkish authorities to improve access to education in rural areas (with particular emphasis on the role of the Village Institutes – Köy Enstitütleri), and outlines the life and work of Sabahattin Ali.
