The character of „The Scarlett Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne against a background of romantic children

Celem niniejszej pracy jest ukazanie motywu dziecka romantycznego w powieści Nathaniela Hawthorne’a "Szkarłatna litera" (tytuł oryginału "The Scarlett Letter") i porównanie sposobu jego realizacji z wybranymi tekstami z literatury europejskiej. Praca ma wskazać, na ile kilkuletnia bohaterka realizuje paradygmat dziecka romantycznego skrystalizowany na starym kontynencie. Pierwsza część pracy zarysowuje pokrótce kształt literatury amerykańskiej okresu romantyzmu i umiejscawia w niej Hawthorne’a, wprowadza też ogólne informacje na temat obecności dziecka w literaturze. Druga część dzieli się na trzy rozdziały: o predestynacji, radości i moralności Pearl. W tej części sylwetka Pearl jest zestawiana z wybranymi przykładami z literatury europejskiej, głównie polskiej i angielskiej, dla wskazania ewentualnych analogii i podkreślenia różnic między małymi bohaterami.

The aim of this thesis is showing a motif of romantic child in “The Scarlett Letter”(Nathanel Hawthorne’s novel) and comparing the method of the realization with chosen texts of European literature. Thesis proves to what degree several years old character realizes a paradigm of romantic child which was crystallized on The Old Continent.The first part of the thesis briefly depicts a shape of an American literature in romanticism and localizes Hawthorne there; also interposes general informations about a place of child in literature.The second part is divided into three chapters : about predestination, happiness and morality of Pearl. In this part a profile of Pearl is compared with chosen examples from European literature – mainly Polish and English to show the possible analogies and emphasize the differences among the baby characters.
