Markiz de Sade w "Niedolach cnoty", pod osłoną opowieści o prześladowanej cnocie i wynagradzanym występku, przedstawia zdobycze filozofii oświecenia. Wywraca sens startych już, sztandarowych pojęć wieku świateł, takich, jak prawo natury, wolność, rozum; uosabia upadający Ancien Régime. Pisząc pod koniec wieku XVIII, markiz obnaża schyłek epoki, która przestała już wierzyć w swoje ideały.

Marquis de Sade In "Justine", under the cover of a story of a persecuted virtue and a gratified deliquency, presents achievements of the philosophy of the age of Enlightenment. He intentionally perverts the sense of the main terms of his age, like law of nature, freedom, reason. He incarnate the decline of Ancien Régime. Writing at the end of a XVIIIth century, he bares the decline of his age that has no longer believed in its ideals.

Dans "Les infortunes de la vertu", le roman sur la vertu persecutée et le vice gratifié, Marquis de Sade présente les tendances philosophiques de l'époque des Lumières. Il pervertit intentionnellement le sens des termes majeures de son âge: la loi naturelle, la liberté, la raison. Il incarne l'Ancien Régime qui moribond. A la fin du XVIIIe siècle il dénude la décrépitude de l'âge de la raison qui ne croyait plus en ses idéaux.
