The impact of the Chernobyl disaster on the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Tematem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest: „Wpływ katastrofy w Czarnobylu na rozpad ZSRR”. W pracy przeanalizowano przebieg wydarzeń z 1986 roku oraz ich wpływ na kryzys zaufania do władz radzieckich w różnych sferach życia społecznego i politycznego. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono analizie polityki informacyjnej ZSRR, cenzury, dezinformacji, międzynarodowej reakcji na katastrofę, a także społecznym, medycznym i psychologicznym skutkom w krajach byłego bloku wschodniego.Głównym wnioskiem pracy jest teza, że katastrofa w Czarnobylu ujawniła systemowe wady władzy radzieckiej, pogłębiła kryzys legitymizacji komunistycznego porządku i w konsekwencji stała się jednym z kluczowych czynników, które przyspieszyły jego upadek.Praca koncentruje się wokół trzech głównych zagadnień badawczych:1.Jakie były bezpośrednie i długoterminowe skutki polityki informacyjnej ZSRR podczas katastrofy?2.Jak Czarnobyl wpłynął na mobilizację społeczeństw narodowych w republikach radzieckich, zwłaszcza w Ukrainie?3.Czy reakcja społeczna i międzynarodowa na katastrofę miała realny wpływ na delegitymizację reżimu radzieckiego?Celem pracy było pokazanie, w jaki sposób Czarnobyl stał się katalizatorem zmian politycznych, a nie tylko katastrofą technologiczną. Badania opierają się na literaturze historycznej i socjologicznej, a także na źródłach pierwotnych prezentowanych przez takich autorów, jak Serhij Plohiy, Michaił Gorbaczow, David R. Marples i Paweł Sekuła.Wnioski potwierdzają tezę postawioną we wstępie. Katastrofa czarnobylska stała się nie tylko tragedią ekologiczną, ale także impulsem do narodowego przebudzenia i osłabienia centralnej władzy w Moskwie. Praca jest syntetycznym omówieniem tego wieloaspektowego zjawiska w kontekście historycznym i politycznym, obejmującym okres 1986–1991 lat.

The subject of this bachelor thesis is: ‘The impact of the Chernobyl disaster on the collapse of the USSR’. The thesis analyses the course of events in 1986 and their impact on the crisis of trust in the Soviet authorities in various spheres of social and political life. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the USSR's information policy, censorship, disinformation, the international response to the disaster, as well as the social, medical and psychological consequences in the countries of the former Eastern Bloc.The main conclusion of the thesis is that the Chernobyl disaster revealed systemic flaws in Soviet power, deepened the crisis of legitimacy of the communist order and, as a consequence, became one of the key factors that accelerated its collapse.The thesis focuses on three main research questions:1.What were the immediate and long-term effects of the USSR's information policy during the disaster?2.How did Chernobyl influence the mobilisation of national societies in the Soviet republics, especially in Ukraine?3.Did the social and international response to the disaster have a real impact on the delegitimisation of the Soviet regime?The aim of the thesis was to show how Chernobyl became a catalyst for political change, rather than just a technological disaster. The research is based on historical and sociological literature, as well as primary sources presented by authors such as Serhiy Plohiy, Mikhail Gorbachev, David R. Marples and Paweł Sekuła.The conclusions confirm the thesis put forward in the introduction. The Chernobyl disaster was not only an ecological tragedy, but also an impetus for national awakening and the weakening of central power in Moscow. The work is a synthetic discussion of this multifaceted phenomenon in its historical and political context, covering the period from 1986 to 1991.
