The symbol of the rose in selected elements of culture and everyday life of the inhabitants of eastern and western Małopolska (Poland)

Symbol róży obecny był w kulturze już od czasów starożytnych, następnie w miarę upływu lat był adaptowany do nowych idei czy religii. Celem pracy było zbadanie znaczenia symbolu róży w wybranych elementach życia codziennego, religijnego i kultury mieszkańców Małopolski oraz analiza porównawcza znaczenia tego symbolu dla ludności z zachodniej i wschodniej części regionu. Dane zebrano za pomocą ankiety i podczas badań terenowych. Nie stwierdzono różnic pomiędzy znaczeniem symbolu róży dla mieszkańców wschodniej i zachodniej części Małopolski, a ogólnym znaczeniem tego symbolu, również brak różnic dla mieszkańców miasta i wsi. Nie stwierdzono różnic w przedstawieniu symbolu róży pomiędzy wschodem i zachodem tego regionu. Badany symbol ma większą wagę w kulturze materialnej niż w sakralnej. Symbol róży ma nadal duże znaczenie w życiu mieszkańców Małopolski.

The symbol of the rose has been present in culture since ancient times and was adapted to new ideas or religions as the years went by. The aim of this study was to examine the significance of the symbol of the rose in selected elements of the daily life, religion and culture of inhabitants of the Lesser Poland (Malopolska) region, and a comparative analysis of the meaning of this symbol for people from the western and eastern parts of the region. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire and during field research. No differences were found between the meaning of the rose symbol for the inhabitants of the eastern and western parts of Lesser Poland and the overall meaning of this symbol, also no differences were found for urban and rural residents. No differences were found in the representation of the rose symbol between the east and west of the region. The studied symbol has more importance in material culture than in sacred culture. The symbol of the rose is still significant in the live of inhabitants of the Lesser Poland region.
